Havok.

I have some smaller pens at perimeter my dogs are slow to get to for a disturbance. Thus raccoons get a little more time to cause trouble before pushed out or caught. With those pens I do not use a roosting pole where the raccoon can disturb birds and get them down of the roost and ultimately at side of pen where they can reach through to grab a bird. What I do is use a milk crate like you have for nest and locate it upside down at center of pen. Birds roost on that. With broody hens I keep the nest in the center of the pen as well. When using the pen for breeding, use two crates, upside for roost with second on side with lip added for nest site. If you need to collect eggs, then pull cage so side gets closer to opening of the nest crate then reach under without disturbing birds. This works very well for pens that are not moved frequently.

Another trick has been placing pens within 6 inches of the hotwire. Some of my hotwire is simply to provide a hotspot along only one side of a row of pens. Birds can use that side as cover when disturbed and the raccoons seem to have problem working the entire cage perimeter because they get zapped on one side of it. The only work the sides well away from the wire.
