there's hope cold front coming Thursday high only 83
Supposed to be in the 70s all week. All rain toward the end of the week though. Saw over 30 mallards, mostly local but I did see a pair of ruddy ducks while out this morning. They usually show up early, gone by the time the season starts.

Some strains were derived from battlecross birds. If you go back in time far enough you will find all games are derived from ancestors that where battle crosses. I state ALL. This has been going on for about 8,000 years which predates New World and European interests in the activity.

In my grandfathers hands, the pure strain broodfowl were not routinely trialed in the pit. That was reserved for when more than enough birds were present to meet needs and some fair method for whittling them down was needed. What was routinely tested in the pit was the crossed offspring of pure brood fowl. Only pure brood fowl that consistently produced quality battle crosses where allowed to continue to do so and to be used to produced new pure brood fowl. Brood fowl and battlecross fowl were treated as separate lines of production even though there was a lot of overlap between the birds used.
Well said...
Before Europeons got there hands on them and started making charts and diagrams about breeding, regular people were doing it the old fashion way.
Gamefowl originated from people fighting chickens... and the cocks who won probably got to continue breeding and making more fighters. Survival of the fittest.

At some point a homogenous population will emerge for specific competitions (when rules are applied). Only when the pit is consistent do the winning fowl become consistent. Players made for the game..

I dont like that specialization. I'd rather have a all around good fowl.

My dad always kept German Shepherds and the reason was this "They are NOT best at anything, but they are second best at everything". This is what I want my fowl to be...

when u sell them u should tell the buyer they're second best. I personally think do one thing and do it best

That's like a specialist v/s a Jack of all trades

yeah thats not my style...

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
-Robert A. Heinlein

In addition to being game, fast, strong, durable plus things unmentionable here, good game cocks must be able to cover a hen to produce fertile eggs, good game hens should produce at least two viable clutches of eggs when covered by a fertile cock, good game hens should be able to get broody and raise chicks, good games should respond well to handling and tame rapidly, good games should have good resistance to disease and parasites occurring in the area they kept, good games should tolerate confinement well, good games be able be able to thrive in a free-range setting when predator management is sound. Multiple dimensions have always been a factor in their selection.
