How do you keep water for the birds up in there where it freezes so much?
I bring warm water out of the house. I keep multiple milk jugs of water inside my back door next to the wood stove. They don't drink much when it's real cold so you don't have to fill the cups past halfway, it's gonna freeze anyway. Sometimes I'll just take out hot water to melt the ice in the cups too.

When the light started to last longer last spring I just kept on the winter schedule so the less light don't bother me
I have a lot less birds in winter so the overall workload is less than spring and summer though anyway.

I water just before dawn. Birds usually comb off roost whether thirsty or not. When it gets really cold and windy you can not keep liquid water out for more than half hour after application. Thus they get one good drink of liquid water. At same time I put out soaked oats even placing them in water bowls. Slows freezing and makes so birds can chip at oats and water throughout the day. Additionally, birds not in production mode during those times so water needs greatly reduced. They are really good at scavenging metabolic water when cold as eat more and do not purposely loose water through evaporative cooling. My birds will also make serious use of snow as a water source.

We don't get much freezing weather and when it does, it's thawed by noon. It's those 100+ days that neither the birds nor I do well in. There isn't much I can do, but keep plenty of clean fresh water out. If there was any way to change climates with you guys, I would. Gotta stay close to kids and grandkids.

Having fun window shopping Craigslist for birds of color. A bit scary too. I have no idea what I am really looking at.
You too? It is fun to check out the variety. I suppose you could get lucky and find something worthwhile.

First heavier frost last night. Just about right on schedule for this year!
