I have got to find a way to hold pens down without the stakes. A few years back I tried ropes but they were a hastle when moving pens. Prior to that pens simply in cover of trees. Trees, even during winter really slow wind down. I have a 2 acre area that is being allowed to grow trees for future cover. It be a couple more years before that is ready. Already got area fenced in. Same area **** bobcat also worked so got to keep it out with dogs.

I know this is far fetched but people around here fill cups with cement and put a price of house wire bent in a u in it upside down when it's getting hard and use as trot line weights. Could u work off that theory

I don't know what I did, I walked into the lacy pen like I do everyday with a feed bucket and the pullet starts kicking me like a cock. The stag sees and runs over and starts wailing up my leg on me broke both spurs off. its hot and he's charged up so his blood is flying all over in the pen all over my clothes and boots I had to keep him at bay with my foot to get feed into the cup. The pullet was through I don't know why they flipped.
Never seen a pullet do such a thing. Maybe it is a "man fighter" pullet? I can understand the cock joining in on the commotion, but not the pullet starting it.

I am inclined to think that way because we know it happens with our fish. You have the nice big studs that make the nest and take care of the kids and you have deadbeat moms that drop off kids with dad then run. On top of the dead beat moms, you got the girly men that look like the moms, but they are dudes. A big stud thinks he has two gals coming in when in fact one is a transvestite stealing some of his action. Then you got the skinny neighbor boy that has huge nads for his size and he sneaks in too.

lol, I know you are being serious in your description. I had a pullet when I was a kid, or a least I thought she was a masculine looking pullet... Turns out she was more male than female, but appearance wise looked like a slightly masculine female. Had to do some searchring to find a description, but they old black and white pics matched my bird pretty well.

During much of the winter, no covers used where they are otherwise protected from elements like provided by the bamboo. Wind breaks more important. Exception comes with freezing rain events like expected for next couple days. Feathers are very well suited for the exposure. No problems when birds in good feather and nutrition. They may eat more but all do when not under milder thermal conditions. Covers put back on once temperatures consistently back in the 60;s or expected to get into 80's F. Heat is the bugger, especially before birds acclimate to it in the spring.

Penned birds in more exposed locations have shade cloth like used on greenhouses placed on them. Some of those pens proved problematic with wind as reported a couple days back. Normally those pens shed covers when wind really strong. Normally.

Next year I will push pens in closer to bamboo but need to be able to keep raccoon out of it first.

Free-range birds sometimes roost in locations far more exposed than shown, Getting 30 feet up into an oak tree makes for some serious weather exposure and they seem very keen on being in the sun when it is below 50 F in the morning.
I like to keep them covered on top at all times. They get enough wind, rain, snow, sleet and hail through the front and back when weather gets bad. I sure as h*ll wouldn't want to get rained on all day long if a simple tarp could prevent it. Have you no compassion? Lol
