You cruel people. The fox is just being a fox. Killing the poor female, before should could bring babies into the world. You murderers.
I hold no grudges with foxes, raccoons etc. They are just doing what comes natural.
When you are specifically trying to trap a particular fox it's amazing what you'll learn from them. Their excellent nose gets them in trouble every time.

When they do come in, they are very particular about timing and direction of approach. Mine come in once, stir up chickens, then get escorted out hard by dogs. I still can't get over how the leave a stink even I can follow.

Also waiting for a Grey Fox to try and work me. Neighbor with games a few miles away gets only Grey's on him and he claims they are easy to shoot.

I guess I've been lucky with my hot wire, the only thing that I have an occasional problem with has wings.

No problem with penned birds behind electric fence. I have s bunch of pullets running loose though. They're extra technically but I ain't purposely feeding the wildlife.

Grey fox are easier to call and shoot than a red fox but grey fox can be difficult to snare. They can slink and move there skin kinda like a cat. I can neck snare mink easier than greys. They are tough. Then again maybe I'm just not that good at trapping.

This weather event with freezing rain is about over.Yesterday was the worst for walking and driving but least of an issue for birds. Got another shelacking since midnight but it will be gone by noon. Birds had hardest time with Friday where ice actually built up on their feathers although not in amounts that hurt their ability to stay warm. All the birds had to do to get ice off was get into sun.

Most of the time after this kind of crap we get a proper blizzard. This round temperatures will be approaching 60 F. Did not even see an uptick in feed consumption.

That could be prevented with a simple $3 tarp

I was commenting that very little trouble came with the freezing rain. There are benefits for the birds when not covered. During winter months, especially when temperatures are low, the birds go out of there way to get direct exposure to sunlight. I am certain your birds so the same when allowed. The ground they stand on also gets much drier than it would be covered tightly allowing some benefits when bird interacts with the soil. I have the $3 dollar tarps and used them for years and not for years, plus other cover types. Not using the tarps exclusively has logic behind it. A 2' x 2' piece of plywood provides the best advantages of the tarp without the negatives.

Put a thermometer under the your covered pens and in more exposed areas to see difference in temperature when sun is shining. Difference will favor covered pens when light is low and windy but that represents only a small percentage of the time.
