I like freeranging... its good for them... I have to watch them most of the time tho...

I have had only a handful of cocks that wouldnt destroy themselves trying to pen fight. Usually if they have been free range their whole life they tend to do really well freeranging into adulthood. (from what I have observed). Once you pen them they get the "itch" to destroy other roosters in their pen.

i only recently found out that chicks can learn to use a variety of waterers not just the usual bucket you flip over

One thing mine haven't taken to is the little red cup with the yellow toggle valve. Glad I only bought one because that thing is useless. Nothing but overhead drippers in my pens from now on.

Not sure what you mean by a higher standard. It's either game or not. There really isn't any gray area here. They either go the distance or they don't.
okay maybe "higher standard" wasnt the exact right phrase to use but i think you can get my jist im not disagreeing with you and i never said a grey area existed theres just a lot of missing information here theres no telling exactly how the bird behaved i think its safe to assume he didnt give up or run considering what shape he was in its like executing some one without any evidence of a crime just not fair
Bad husbandry to have "games" and anything male (chicken) freeranging. Now the stag is in or was in a situation that should never have presented itself
this i agree with and i would say is another reason to not be so hasty to cull

Nope. Right away he was making excuses that he was young, the other bird was heavier etc. that's what I was referring too. The owner of the bird can tell if he was pen fighting or not.

Bigger/older rooster (regardless of gameness) could have knocked him around silly. Size, Strength and Mental Maturity play major roles in combat (well before gameness would kick in).

That's absolute bullsh*t and you know it! 9 months is not that young. I have had to pen every stag I've had well before that. The longest any have went was around 7 months or so.
