For a while we were so frustrated with her chicken plucking habits we almost turned her into an indoor dog. That cured her. Too many rules inside. Only one rule outside, don't touch chickens. They take so long to mature that it takes a long time for them to get out of that puppy stage. I'm prepared for the fact that the mix may never grow out of it. But our pyr has turned into an awesome dog as an adult.
good to read hope it works out. Some of these game chickens aren't all that easy to replace so I err on the side of caution. But I run my stuff like a prison anyway. I've had one stag get out in all my time and he ended up killing himself taking on 3 or 5 other stags and cocks. I have had big problems with predators before the fence since I put it up i haven't had any (knock on wood)

Oh I know. My dad had over 100 of his birds killed by a neighbors Labrador once. Lived almost a mile away but the closest neighbor. The neighbor refused to pay for replacement, because those birds are expensive. So my dad loaded them all up in the back of his truck. Let them get ripe, then dumped them right at his door step. We never did see that dog again though. He just broke into pen after pen and and killed everything he could get to while my dad was at work. Since then my dad hasn't been as serious at it. He just breeds for his own personal enjoyment and trades back and forth with friends. He has a fraction now of what he used to. I'm just glad our dog keeps things out of the back. We don't even have the stray neighbor dogs going through our trash out front anymore. I guess she sounds extra scary. Lol.

I think he also wants me to get into it. Since he does keep providing me with birds. I've had a few different games, that I've raised from babies, but I always found them a home elsewhere before the fighting started.

I've lost a pair that were penned lost their heads to raccoons. Lost a couple more when pens flipped but other than that anything I've lost were free ranging. I'm well aware of the risks. I hatch plenty and pen the important birds and do my best to kill everything that comes after them. I'm doing pretty good too. It's easier and better for the birds if your able to do it.

They are way calmer and tame down quickly when loose. i don't even close their pen door at night. They come and go as they please.
They go to bed at night in the pen and are out first thing in the morning.

I love letting mine free range. But to get eggs I have to bring the dog in at 4am and keep her in the house until the afternoon. The only time she wants to be inside is during the summer because AC. Lol. In the winter I have to fight to get her in the house. They eat so much less when they can roam around and find their own food, and the eggs taste better. I used to have multiple roosters loose on the yard with their ladies at a time. Can't do that anymore. Lol.

When u see a bunch of young stags with rough tails, yep kept in a pen. When u come home to birds beat to hell and back yep let em go just one day too long. It's all about timing. Lol
I don't know about any fancy songs or noises they make like others But it's fairly easy to tell when they need to be put up by a little bit of basic observation.
