I had a couple hens set eggs together recently, hatched ten. one had three hanging with her, the other, seven. everything was ok for about two days. then I came home the other afternoon and saw one had been into it pretty good. found the other a few hours later, she musta been the loser. both are doing ok now, one has nine junk biddies and is free(sets for the night right beside the front steps to the house), the other in a 2x2 box with 2x4 run

My hens do the pecking order thing. Even after being separated for long periods, I can bring them together for purpose of forming breeding trios. Each year I also combine groups of hen so save on forage space for winter. That does not mean they do not cause headaches, nor does it mean they do not throw only game.

Those of you with hens that are more difficult also post pictures of hens holding tails like I have never seen in my birds, even on male side.

True, but I am not generally able to make that call based on the hens themselves. Rather their brothers, and especially their sons needed to make call. Offspring produced are not counted as much until they something for the quality of their mother. That means a hen is at least three before I make call.
