how do you guys make your hens easier to handle? mine arent flighty, they will walk right by my side and will eat out of my hand but if i go to reach for one to pick them up they arent having anything to do with it. im not trying to pet and love on them but it would be nice to be able to catch them and put them in pens or whatever when i feel like it
Most hens would probably fit into that category. I have maybe 5-6 game hens that will let me just walk right up and pick them up anytime. Most will do the sidestep.

Most I pick off the roost. Most of those are calm enough to stand on my arm as I walk them to pen. The perching allows me to carry half a dozen birds on one arm. All involve some handling as chicks.

A few come when called to fly to hand as part of working team. Handling more intensive and daily for those. Intensive means 30 seconds per bird. I am training up a new team now.

Birds no handled at least a little as chicks will be flighty until a lot more effort invested in taming them like done with stags raised without my direct management.

Genetics is also a factor. Used to have a real flighty strain that required more work but even those tamed down.

Dusty the crop duster keeps banking over my house. Sob is mollesting my hunt.

First birds were outta the trees at 5:55. Last couple just flew down at 7:19. Either they are lazy or they are smarter than the rest.
