Where do north and south actually end? I am halfway between something and something and it can get up to 110 F here and down to -10 F.
Mason Dixon line. I'm at 39.something. It gets just as hot and humid here as it does in Louisiana just not as many days thankfully. When I think of north I think of cold and snow. Some years we get a lot of snow, some not so much. Temps are usually colder longer too. Plenty of days at or below 0.

What are benefits of the coarse particulates?

Waste part already addressed. Less fines / dust is important. I also like to walk past pens multiple times tossing in small amount of feed from a distance with each pass. The larger particulates hold a tighter pattern making it easier to hit target an verify. Finally, can determine easier when they are getting picky for something other than particle size or color. My birds vary intake as a function of season which I suspect strongly for the free-range juveniles is an indication something is changing in terms of what the forage base is providing. It is nice to be able to compensate.

The two mist uncomfortable days I've ever felt heat and humidity wise were sept in Louisiana and June in Vermont. Louisiana takes it by a long shot though for consistency

Here conditions are over the place. This is the second year in a row with mild temperatures ranking in memory. 2012 was a bastard with respect the drought. Last year it was so wet I had trouble keeping chicks alive. Last winter we did not even get below 0 F at all and have not broke 100 for two years in a row.

Had to get me new "dress up outfit" for the wedding I have to go to on Friday.
I did like every real man would do and ordered 1/2 dozen arrows, new broadheads, an extra longbow string and some turkey feathers instead. Life is all about compromise.
How's that for fluff!

This weekend I will attend a wedding and my son has a hay ride. In morning before hay ride my daughter and I will be constructing about four pens using heavier duty welded wire. Some fluff and some not.
