Shubin you talk a lot about survival related type stuff. Do you actually know anything about survival seriously? Like making fires (which ain’t hard where your at) in wet conditions, knives, reading a compass and actually using it to find your way? The list goes on.

I dont like packing a lot... The first time I went I packed in way too much and had a 50lb pack or more.

Every year I bring less and less and I enjoy it a lot more.
You learn that from experience. Keep a mental note of what you actually used and what you could replace or do away with altogether. Nothing sucks more than hauling around weight you don’t need. By the way how far did you actually hike with 50lbs on your back? 50 lbs is a ton of weight for backpacking. I can only imagine what you brought with you. Lol

I'd say I consider survival in my environment quite a bit...
but Im not worried about fires in wet conditions.. lol that doesn't happen here.

Im more worried about obtaining/storing water and surviving intense heat. Or navigating out of populated areas during crisis. Or protecting my family and home if I am planning on staying put.

I spent my whole life outdoors (just not hunting) and was in boy scouts for a year or so. I can read maps, topography, and have good sense of direction. I keep adding to my seed bank, and have water stored (but not nearly enough yet).

Go get truly lost in the woods. That’s one of the scariest feelings in the world. I’ve done it more than once unfortunately being stupid. Everything you think you’d do in that situation pretty much goes out the window.

Imo all that prepping stuff is ridiculous. People just need a hobby. Nothing wrong with storing some guns, ammo, food, etc. but eventually all that will run out and if you can’t catch, kill, hunt, trap your screwed. I find all this stuff interesting because I think people focus on the wrong things. It’s easy to go buy a gun or ammo now. It takes more time to actually learn true survival type stuff like making simple tools with wood and a knife.

ya that would be tough... Do you walk or stay put and wait for someone?

Its hard to get lost in California. but I got close to not making it back before nightfall on a day hike and was getting really cold. I wasn't lost but I knew that if it got dark I'd potentially get lost or injured or something.. that was kind of scary because I wasnt prepared for it

I agree.
Itd be more important to learn how to farm, raise livestock, and graft trees.. things like that. How to fix things and build chicken coops. Or how to build reservoir/cistern.
