I slept outside under patio during a cold rainstorm because my ex didnt want the dogs in the house. I said I wanted to go out there to be with them. Came in at about 3am.

My birds get less protection than yours for sure. I also feel for them and check them multiple times a night when conditions are tough. Last night less than legal on to describe as walking all the pens. It helps develop an appreciation for wind direction and how even a modest wind break makes a huge difference.

The shrink wrap I have never gone to yet. Dubbing has been the only effective method for controlling frost bite, short of applying heat or allowing cocks to roost on dogs in dog house which has been done more than once.

They do eat snow. You are on the east cost where snow should not be eaten even when not yellow.

My birds with access to snow or ice will not go after liquid water. I just wrapped that up minutes ago watering all with only those in the barn interested in water.

Try sleeping out in snow when -10 F with 30 mph wind waiting for a darn fox all night. I have done that more than once.

The shrink wrap won’t completely prevent frostbite anyway. The moisture from their mouths rises and settles on their combs which are cold. I still have a few with minor frostbite. I have a bunch to dub still. I’ll wait til it’s a little warmer though.

I’m aware that they will eat snow and ice. The problem is they end up just burning more calories when eating snow and ice to keep their body temperature up. So if your giving them extra corn for that purpose and the feeding them snow it’s a wash.

I broke ice twice today after work. Water freezes fast I stayed with em for over an hour all seems well here in the mountains of nc. My Birds are thriving and doing nicely, but Suppose to get real cold after wensday.

Lol the way I look at it is I put them in those pens. It’s not hard to keep em alive but it’s a ton of work to keep em comfortable. I can’t just sit in the warm house knowing I could have done more for them.
That’s kinda why I get pissed when other guys act like it’s no big deal to lose 30 birds in one night. Everyone knows what the weather is like where they live it’s your responsibility to keep them thriving. Most people I run across are flat out lazy and just make excuses.

It’s wrong for people to think that the birds will be able to survive in this weather without a person caring for them. @roosterhavoc you are doing a great job keeping your birds protected from the elements. The strongest bird cannot survive without food, water, and shelter from the elements.

I’ve heard that a few times that they won’t drink water much in the cold. Mine do. Just posted a pic with two hens drinking 20 minutes after I gave em water.
