Two things contribute to dehydration during winter; eating very dry finely ground feeds and a high worm burden.

Fluid intake does appear to decrease when temperatures drop, especially hen they stop intentional loss of moisture to cool off. As they consume more food to stay warm, they also produce more water through metabolism. Some time ago I did the calculations and water produced from metabolism can exceed that they drink, especially when food consumption is high.

I remember as a kid that the corn used in feed mixing room was a lot more like popcorn than the dent corn I currently used. Much we called Indian corn. My brother has been growing a couple strains from Mexico to better approximate what we used to use. I just saw something on the Jimmy Red that looks like it might have more pigment and less starch. Anyone every tried such?

I’m confused. You just proved the point they should get plenty of water in winter. That water they produce during digestion is a net loss not a gain.
