I’m well aware that they remove some water for retention. If provided though and they drink it that means to me they can use it. A lot still depends on what and how much you feed.

That assumes water in their system is limiting or below optimum. Going above optimum does not provide benefits, otherwise they would be drinking much more than the do.The more water in a chickens system the easier it is for them to retain heat. The better they retain heat while burning through less calories the healthier, stronger and better off they will be in the long run.
