I’m well aware that they remove some water for retention. If provided though and they drink it that means to me they can use it. A lot still depends on what and how much you feed.

The more water in a chickens system the easier it is for them to retain heat. The better they retain heat while burning through less calories the healthier, stronger and better off they will be in the long run.

That assumes water in their system is limiting or below optimum. Going above optimum does not provide benefits, otherwise they would be drinking much more than the do.

It’s not about going above optimum. I don’t waterboard them. I just try to provide them with water so it’s there when they want it.

That needs to be clarified. When it is very cold like now, providing water twice daily gives them access to liquid version only about 2 hours of the day. When I track penned birds, most ingest water once per day. The other application of water they look for me to give them something different, even if food not all consumed yet.

Most evenings, all feed consumed when they rise to roost. This evening about half had feed as grain still on ground.

Late season hatched stag my son claims as his own first chicken. Poor bird has to walk on bare grass, cruel I know. Crop is topped off even 2 hours before rising to roost. Notice all the feces below his roost in the right. When given a choice he avoids stepping in it. That only seems to hold in the over-sized pens on grass.
