The only reason they got haircuts was cuz their feathers on top was about a half inch long and my buddy didn't like it

Battle trimmed, I've never heard it called that before. If you enter your fowl in a poultry show, they have to be trimmed in order to get scored. On the other note if you had long hair and every time I went to hit you I grab that hair with the other hand, then yes, if your hair was very short and I'm not able to hold you down with it, I would say shorter is better. No frost bite, no chance of pox, no comb or wattles is a win win to me.
 
I heard the Spanish/Cubans leave the comb on for as long as they can (until showing) because it will strengthen the neck...

Mating schemes are designed to propagate the good traits but minimize bad traits and reduce inbreeding. This image was on Sabong and does a nice job of showing the inbreeding coefficients on the right, or the "degree of inbreeding". The higher the F value the more inbred the individuals are. As an aside, for some large animal breeding programs the F value is kept in the low single digits to avoid inbreeding depression.
