Cruel and unusual is letting them eat their own crap on the ground and building cocci then letting their intestines hemmorhage and bleed out till they die of shock
Haha I’m just joking. Although I’ve never had any birds die from cocci. I do feed medicated crumbles though. I also clean pens regularly so that doesn’t happen.

I use rabbit cages a lot now. but you have to condition birds to return to it each night and not to roost on top. It is hard on broody hen feathers too. I have not seen toe damage when used as night time roosting.

As a matter of fact if people cleaned their pens more often it would probably never happen. People are lazy though so I’m sure it happens quite a bit.

I've had 1 on the ground. They bounce back fast with double doses of that stuff for 3 days then none I do feed medicated starter and all stay off the ground now till feathered so about a few weeks old

I was surprised those 2 blue chicks were out and alive in the dome the other day they were not wet but were cold to the touch and there was sitting water all around guess it's that tough ass blue blood lol

Dang blue hen is gonna give me a stroke she's never on the nest. I keep thinking she is abandoning it but no she knows what she's doing
This cold snap messed up things for me. One young pullet freaked out and kept getting off the nest as the eggs were hatching. I managed to save one chick. Another older hen laid a clutch and sat for a couple of days and decided she was done. Guess I will have to wait a little longer.

Last year I came home from work and found a chick soaking wet in the pouring rain just standing there. Don’t take long for them to get cold. Blow dryer warmed him right up. Ended up culling him anyway as a stag. Real pretty too. That’s the way it goes.

Pullets do that half the time. It’s really too early up here for me to mess with em yet
