A few years back I had broody hens that would do similar with their chicks. Broodies with chicks less likely to be distracted by other birds making it easier to do.

@Texicano, do you have a lot of Japanese Beetles down your way now? If yes, then it might be really easy to get top quality protein flying to your stags in those runs while they are putting on frame?

Plenty of grasshoppers for the birds to eat.

Grasshopper forage base I have dwarfs yours to be sure, yet the beetles for about a month can come miles around making for real pounds of animal protein.

Mines been having a field day with crickets, grass hoppers,worms and they like gran daddy long legs aswell.

3rd hen that's popped up with yard bred chicks. I know that these are half Murphy, but the other 2 it's anybody's guess.

It does not take many birds per acre to over graze the animal forage base. In my setting it is easy to see a rapid drop in grasshoppers and crickets that most days make up the majority of insect fare during the heat of summer. Most of those consumed come in from surrounding area assuming it is conducive for high grasshopper production. Adult grasshoppers get replenished fast it they can fly. Immature much slower to replenish. Two things can then happen. First is I step in with more complete feed. Second is birds range further afield while foraging. If you have a relatively large number of birds relative to the area foraged and immigration of new forage to replace that consumed, you can do things to concentrate drift. One is what I am playing on Japanese Beetles. Second is to use lights to bring in night flying insects. Another is to have stands of slightly taller vegetation that flying insects are less likely to pass over as drift.
