Idk man maybe I pamper my birds too much lol
No you are not pampering. To do what I do, establish a planting or warm season grasses to form a row on southwest to west side of where your pens are are to be next year. Then as it get hot position your pens so they are into planting a little with balance in the mowed to death lawn like we all like to do. Arrange so you can move pens periodically on rested ground on that row to keep birds on healthy ground. Otherwise your pens are exactly like you have them currently.

A friend of mine lived in AZ for a while and he built some hoop houses covered with shade cloth. I didn't believe him that a black cloth would drop the temp. I was wrong! Stepping into the shade under the cloth was considerably cooler.
Most of the shade cloth I use is recycled from a greenhouse. It makes a huge difference.

Jungle shots. Bamboo, Silver Poplar and Autumn Olive providing some serious cover. That is same place I put a good number of pens each winter right up next to hot-wire for entertainment of raccoons.

These little birds get all the bugs they can eat just by working grass and high vegetation coming right up to it. I never expected it to be so productive.

It is a blast walking down the path at night. Spiders like you have never seen before all over the place.

Only real problem is too much sun. Sarcasm.
