Nevermind, that sheath is compromised of protein. Are they getting too much protein then?

The problem is I have over 100 birds and 2 that way and they’re brothers. What I don’t understand is last year they’re tails were ridiculously huge. I think it has something to do with genetics. I have a 4.5 yr old ruble and all my other birds molt just fine too.
I feed 20% pellets mixed with scratch which brings it down to 16-17%. Nothing crazy.

My feed is around your Range too.
I don't think it's genetics man. My grey BC tail is coming in jacked too, haven't seen it like that ever. I'll ask my mentor tomorrow if the Grey ever had that issue under his care. That hatch is the one I posted the pictures of had a nice tail last year. The Radio Hatch cross tail is like that too, but they're literally the only ones.

Feathers are mostly protein. I tend to see the sheath staying on longer when it is dry or when the birds are growing a lot of feathers quickly and they have a hard time keeping up with the preening which helps remove the sheath. When I raised more show birds, I would mist the birds or mist the liter in the pen to give the birds more moisture when it was really dry and they were growing a new crop of feathers.

Sometimes I would add a little extra oil to the feed. Any food oil should work, but corn, soy or vegetable oil are cheapest. Most feeds are around 3% or so fat, you can bump it up a couple of percent. The birds generally work the sheath off and the feathers turn out okay.
