My chickens LOVE to eat full grown winter squashes - - - butternut, acorn, buttercup, etc.
They are terrible about it too. They do a seek and destroy mission if they know where they are growing.
I have not done the pumpkin thing yet, but since my birds know what the big round things are ......... I am pretty sure mine would eat a
raw pumpkin still on the vine!

Yvonne doesn't look happy with that camera

My Delaware squatted for the first time today!! I think she is only around 19 weeks old (or a wee bit older but not more than 21).

I'm thinking about getting some Dels in the spring to add to my mixed flock, but have a couple questions...

Have any of you found that your Delawares are more susceptible to predators while free ranging than non-white breeds?

Before I fork out the money I want to make sure that these white chickens aren't going to be eaten up by predators. I've successfully free ranged many chickens in the past three years and haven't lost a one while free ranging. But they were all colored breeds, such as BOs, RIRs, BRs, BAs, RSLs, etc., with the exception of one white hen (a mixed breed that I hatched). I also have three April-born Columbian-colored roosters that I'm free ranging along with their colored siblings, and I haven't lost any of these yet either. I've been told by the locals to stay away from white chickens, but maybe they're alright???

Also, if anyone has any info about and/or pics of Sand Hill Delawares please share! According to their description they seem to have a really good meat/egg strain, so if I get some, I'll be getting them from there.

Thanks for any help!
