Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Thanks! I am ashamed to say I have not been here for ages....the new del web site is thedelclub.webstarts.com at least for now. We have had a HORRIBLE time with webstarts, and that is all I am going to say, LOL!

My older Del girls still lay huge eggs, and they are still my big pets. Miss Maryann will pick at me till I pick her up -

Am going to try to catch up, but I think there are days worth of reading here - hope everyone is well!

I found this thread today and I have to say that your Delaware chicken pictures are gorgeous. I have 2 left out of 5 bought 2 years ago. I don't read much on BYC about them but mine are consistent layers of jumbo eggs. I had 1 die early on of being egg bound and I was afraid that was a problem with them, but no others. Thanks for sharing! Sue
Can you share where you got those Dels , I'm interested in the jumbo sized eggs. (& I have a so-so looking Del hen, so I've been considering getting her some buddies) Thanks.

I wish I could. I would have bought more. I got them off our local Craig's List as yr old. I think they are much older. The guy turned out to live a couple roads over from me. I keep watching but wouldn't dare go over without his say so. It wasn't comfortable. He was waiting for me with the hens in the back of his pick up truck out near the road. Not sure what his deal was. I'll tell you what. I'll keep my eyes open for eggs if you'd like. I'm going to hatch just a couple with my Maran's roo to see if I can still get these jumbo eggs. I never see Delaware chicks for sale locally. I'm sorry. Wish I could be of more help. Sue

Sue, there are a lot of breeders that do not like to have people, espically strangers from Craig'slist shopping , wandering around in their chicken yard. Bio-security and theft prevention come to mind as reasons...... stan

I know as I keep people away also, but I don't think this was the case. I wouldn't go there alone. It was all creepy but the chickens looked fine and have been. That was my first and last experience buying live chickens. I now hatch everything, all from my own, for my own needs.
I don't think I could accurately describe where I bought them. (I live in a very rural town and my neighbors knew and worked with him, plus the ad told where he lived, near me.). It was nutty. Thanks. Sue

I understand the bio security thing, but I also understand 'feels creepy wouldn't go back there ever period".

At least the chickens turned out good :)
I've got a homemade bator I'm using for the 1st time in the NYD Hatchalong. Not real sure how well it is working :(
Almost all of the eggs are too dark (maran) for me to really see into, plus it my 1st time so I don't feel confident tossing them.
After this I've got a few changes I want to make to it, then I have some duck hatching eggs (Welsh Harlequin) to set jan 5 to hatch Groundhog Day.

Then I'm not sure, I have a long wish list. My Del. is a pol pullet, I'm debating putting her w/ a pure Blue Ameraucana rooster I just lucked into then I can make some EE for colored egg sales plus test fertility. So I'm not in a rush to get my Del a Del Roo, it is just kinda a maybe, depending on how her eggs are etc. Its maybe # 8 ish on the wish list ; >

Sounds like my plan!

Interesting- they do not look like any Delawares I have seen- they are rather gray- Del chicks should be purely yellow, and the feathers white with black markings. I wonder what is in there????

Check the Delaware club web site for a list of breeders. The site is changed- contact me if you need the web address.
The chicks are terribly dark, aren´t they? I´ve no doubt that they´re not true Dels as at least one of the 5 has a totally wrong face. And 3 of the chicks have brown in them as well. I´ll probably keep the dark pullets as I think they´re pretty, but not to breed as Delawares, of course, although they behave very much like Dels.....very forward, up early, out late...! I´ll try to get more chicks from the same supplier as the older Dels I have. What did you think of the photo of the older birds? I think the two hens are a reasonable shape, and hefty, too! Undecided about the cockerel.

I have several Delaware Cockerals about 16 weeks old from my own breeding. Some appear too narrow, the legs are really close together and some seem to have a fairly narrow looking skull (not appealing to my novice eye). Decent combs, really nice yellow legs and some look like they will have close to ideal colour, nice barring in tails, etc. Do legs that are close together ever broaden out past this age? In my limited experience they are culls but I know these birds take a while to mature and 16 weeks is pretty young. Can post some pics if it would help, I think I have the afternoon and tomorrow off of work :)
