Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Hi, I thought I would retract my posts of having "hatchery" Dels. I was reading a post about the Delaware Giants and through going back in my records, those are the ones I got my first Dels from.

I don't know why I thought they were hatchery, but it was a long time ago!

OMG rustyswoman...you made a mistake? I can never speak to you again now cause I never make mistakes none of us do.

No worries from my standpoint gal...they came from where they came from right?

LOL You are great Cetawin. Yes, and it was the name JS Seed Supply that made me think they were hatchery for some reason.

I picked myself up off the ground shortly after Cetawin, Rwoman.

Heavens. . .a lot of the people on this thread seem very happy with their hatchery Dels, so maybe there is some fine stock out there, depending on the hatchery?

Does anyone know how you start/get a Banty Del? And what are the size limitations? How small do you have to be to be classified as a Banty?

Hi Joletabey,

I am not sure now that my 3 came from a hatchery.

In fact I am not sure they are purebred Dels!!! I bought them off ebay back in eary summer and did not pay attention to the Delaware "giant" part.
They look like Dels, act like Dels (?) are they Dels? Or a cross with a Jersey Giant.

I guess the people selling the eggs are not even sure! Hmmmm. Sure glad I have some of Cynthias and a few other breeders.

Rwoman, well, like Cetawin says, they came from where they came from, and if you like them, what the heck!

Right now I feel like "murdering" mine. . . .I never had kids of my own, but this must be what it's like. Whine, bite, squawk, complain, "don't eat the yogurt no more, mama, only want BANANA", "who cares if I step on my sister's head to get what I want?", "I'll bite you, too, so there!" "Gimme, gimme, gimme!!!"
Is this the teenage stage? If so, may spring come soon!

Well, I braved the cold today and got some new pictures of my girls.

The first three are of Sasha, my pullet from Issac and Kira, she will be 22 weeks old this coming Friday and she is truly a sweetheart. I think she believes she's a dog, she just follows me around wherever I go.

The next three pix are of my "heathen bunch", 12 weeks old this Wednesday. 6 pullets from Issac and his girls and Pepper/Lil Bit. I have 2 with nice size and decent coloring. 3 are almost "white" with just a bit of tail black coming thru. Then there's "Sweet Pea", my Lil Dwarf baby. Coloring is good, but she's a short, dumpy little thing

Hope everyone is staying warm. It was 14F here this morning. They are calling for 2-3" of snow for us on Thursday (that's a LOT for us southerners with no snow removal equipment and no salt trucks)...guess the stores will be out of milk, bread, eggs and beer soon

My husband and I always say that everyone is having a French Toast Convention when snow is predicted. Why else would they storm the stores for Bread, Milk and Eggs only? We are expecting an inch on Thurs. Night here in the Zebulon area of NC. You know that means Schools will be closed Friday, and Possibly Monday.....stores will close early, open late...accidents will be all over the road etc.

I'll be picking up some bread and milk on Thursday...although if I really needed Milk, I could just go out and get some from the goats. I'm getting about 1 egg a day average right now (none some days, 3 others) from 6 hens. This just tells me I need more hens!!!!!

Yard, your girls are beautiful. Sasha is gorgeous!

Well I know where my two little heathens came from ... Speckledhen! I am not sure if I should thank her or refuse to speak to her again (she would probably prefer the latter when I call and we end up on the phone for 2 hours!)

Joletabey...keep the chickens they are so much better than kids most of the time. The chickens will never complain because the satellite is out, want an IPod Touch when her IPod thingy she listens to is less than 6 months old, no college tuition, no emotional junk over boyfriends who are pigs (no offense guys), no arguments with DH over the fact she is not allowed to have a boyfriend but does anyway and on and on and on OH and you will never have to spend $100 for a pair of shoes that will be destroyed in 6 months. Trust me...get more chickens and be happy for the extra 50 lbs of food....100 times cheaper and less hassle! No idea on bantam version.

*can anyone tell that my DD is on my crapola list ... I wonder*

Yard Full Of It - I think your wife should worry about that Sasha afterall Sasha is around when she is not home and she has that "I love my daddy" look about her.

She sure is a pretty thing though.

I know that all of these perfections are important to folks who are breeding and especially trying to save a breed like the Delaware but my mine are my pets. I see no need to worry about how 'right' they are or not. My hatchery NHR looks better than ones I have seen tagged as show quality and my mutts look better than some of these 'perfect' chickens. I mean look at Severus...he will not win any ribbons or place best of show but he is gorgeous and just a sweetie. So, my birds, for future reference, come from Cackle (not my choice the co-op orders from them), Meyer and Speckledhen. Oh and my own coop.

Laney...I have a dear native elder friend that lives in Zebulon...beautiful area.

I think Sasha is lovely. What is very interesting about her is that her hackles are very intensely colored, so she is obviously taking after her daddy with her hackle color and that awesome tail black she has! Kira is very lightly colored in the hackles and her daughter, Gracie, is, too, but has her daddy's awesome comb and tail black influenced by Isaac's nice, dark tail barring. She is so lovely. Now, if she'd just lay an egg! She was in the nestbox for an hour day before yesterday and today, Isaac was taking her on a guided tour of all the nests she could pick to lay that first egg in, LOL. He is such a great rooster.

ETA: Sasha's hackles are more laced than barred, which sometimes happens with girls who have awesome tail black like she does. I think my Georgie's hackles are like that. I'd almost think she was Georgie's rather than Kira's daughter, but I know Kira's eggs were really much larger than everyone else's back then, so no mistake there.
