Well, I have had " days" like that, too, much to DH's disappointment.
Typical chicken-woman.
Isaac is being hassled and picked at, just like always. Poor thing can't catch a break. Kira is having trouble coming back into lay after her molt, Phoebe's color isn't great, but Maxie is back to being her normal, goofy self. She has gained a tiny bit of weight even and was in a nest today, though she didn't lay. She acts fine. Kira is acting like she doesn't feel well again, though, and has been on several different nests today, but no egg.
Olivia, my little crossbreed hen, has had her fourth massive dose of penicillin. If this doesn't do it, Livvie isn't long for the world, I'm afraid. I'm out of options for her. And it's all beyond my control.
Zane was outside in the sun today, so he got some rays before having to be shut in for several cold, rainy days.

Rats! At least Maxie is better. Poor Isaac. I don't even know what to say about those girls of his anymore. Glad that Zane got some sun, although they are saying the bad weather will hold off till tomorrow night- maybe he can get a bit tomorrow too.
My Del babies have been holed up in the coop since yesterday afternoon and I hope to let them have an outing for a few hours in the morningl It will be their first time on grass and I am excited. Just hope I can get them all back in. They already want out- crowding up to the door and trying to peek over my shoulder and climb on me to see the great outdoors!

My babies are in the garden...rain starts again tomorrow. *sigh*
I just went out to check my babies- they weren't afraid of looking out the door into the dark, they seem to have adjusted. They had just about emptied both the waterer and feeder, so if the weather is good enough tomorrow, out they go for their first excursion- wish me luck!
What fun! We're going to be getting nasty weather tomorrow through Saturday, so it's coming your way, Beth.

BTW .... I moved the babies out of the garage yesterday. They are in their new home, in the breeder barn. I have a heater, and 2 heat lamps on them, plus the area is sectioned off, as to avoid any draft, and to hold in the heat. I will try to get out there tomorrow and get some pictures.
I also moved the older Delawares out of the grow out pen they were in. They now have their very own pen. Of course, while I was doing all the moving ... Murphy's Law .... I blew a fuse. I had to have an electician come change a fuse. Can you believe that? The stupid breaker box was, apparently, not hooked up for all three fuses. So, when I changed the first two ... I didn't change the correct one! DUH!!! My stupidity cost me $45. But, I was grateful, as he hurried out, when I told him I had babies in the building, that needed heat!

I can not believe this weather. Today, over 60, tomorrow in the 20's with snow tomorrow night? Who is in charge of the weather and where do I get in line to smack him? Can't we just get some steady mid to low 40's like we are supposed to and call it a day?
I'm in a funk. I expected to have lots of babies right now. The person I expected to buy a dozen mottled java chicks from hasn't returned my emails. I'm sure it's just oversite. I want to get some more Delaware eggs but I think I want a new incubator to incubate them in.
On the good side my girls are all laying for me. Could have some nice Delaware crosses if I chose to hatch. Del X Standared White Cochin. I'm thinking..is a white cochin a dominant white or a -color gene? Del x silver phoenix, would that make a dominant silver gene? I'm trying to think how much coloring would be left in these crosses....or if I would end up with mostly white/silver chicks. Of course that doesn't count any recessive genes hiding in there.
I was reading up on color genetics in chickens and I learned that leg color in Delawares is related to the barring in the tails. That is, the gene that is responsible for removing the green color in the legs is responsible for placing the barring/tail black in the tails. So, I guess selecting for good leg color, lack of green is also selecting for good tail barring.
