Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I think they will be just fine together. Their age difference isn't that much. I would put them together. Actually, I have Buckeyes from both of those hatches, and I am going to put them all together in a few days.

Sorry for the delayed answer, I was doing chores all day. I thought she was one of your girls because I remember you saying that Kira was from broody lines, but when I checked her legband while I was marking eggs she was a PA gal. She was so sweet and gentile when I was poking around under her. She squawked a little but never pecked and didn't get mad at me.

Ok, I have a question....without having to go through the 518 pages. I'd love to know why some
folks say that Dellies are "sexable"...and show Dellies with black streaks when mine have never
been any color but yellow this whole time?

Are you talking about sexable when hatched? They are yellow chicks, and can not be sexed at hatch. Yes, we have heard some say that a dot on the head means a roo ..... believe me, it is not true. I don't know how that silly notion ever started.

Yea, I didnt think so, but I have just seen it mentioned here and there. And then I came across "mypetchicken" which showed chicks
with black stripes or dots.....Just thought maybe I was missing something

It sure would make things a lot easier! But sadly it isn't so... I wouldn't be put off by not being able to sex them at an early age though. My Delawares are some of the greatest birds that I have, excellent layers and are by far the most personable chickens I own. I actually just set another 2 dozen eggs in the incubator last week, so I'm going to have many more babies by the end of May!

I agree 100%, I adore my Dellies. They arent going anywhere.

I actually have a dozen heritage coming from shellyb.....(Thanks Cyn!~) and I look forward to adding those to the
flock this fall.

Good Morning Humans Owned by Delawares!

Cyn, I agree 100% I do prefer Thor to my son right now and I can state a good case for it. Thor is loving, squeezeable, always happy to see me, thinks I am Da Bomb, listens when I talk to him and never says anything cross to me....Roosters are better than kids. I think I shall have that made inot a bumper sticker.

Beth, hug your DH and thank him for the offer (I shall keep it in the memory banks for future use). Thankfully my DH is rational when my temper comes into play...he said he evaluated the situation and thought that keeping me here was best for my son, my sanity, my criminal record and my chickens. I hate to admit it but if he spoke to me that way face to face...I would tear his head from body just so I could repeatedly smack that smart mouth and not have to reach up so much to do it. (he is 6'4" and I am 5'2")

Well the Derby was a good race but the weather was absolutely horrid and today is not much better. My poor birds will not get outside today at all. We have a cat that has adopted us...she is a pretty thing...big fluffy gray cat wa curled up in a milk crate in a stall of the barn yeterday during the storm...of course Cheyenne had to feed her so it does not look like she is leaving anytime soon. So Cheyenne bought her food, food and water dishes, a flea collar and a brush last night

I see the writing on the wall...that "okay she can stay as a mouser in the barn and such" cat is going to end up sneaking into Cheyenne's room somehow. Gotta love a cat who is skilled in breaking and entering which is surely what will be the response one day to "Why is the cat in the house and how did she get in your room?" I will hear "Mom I have no idea really"

If the rain slows down I will get a pic of her for you which reminds me, I need to check the cat to see if it is a her and not a him.

I have a sad story, and would like your feedback. I finished my coop and run today and decided to put the chicks outside. They are tired of their 4 foot kiddie pool and at 4 weeks have lots of feathers, and I still have their heat lamp in the coop in case it gets cold at night, besides they were starting to pick at each other a little. So my DH and I took the little cuties out to the pen, put them in the coop and let them find their way out to the run.

No problem for about 3 hours till my very favorite chicken, a Del cockerel flew full force into the 4 x 4 post holding up the fencing. He broke his little neck and died in my arms. I am so sad, and wondering what I could have done differently, or still could do to prevent this from happening to my others. Is this just one of those little chance happenings, or did I build it wrong. My DH thinks I should put something next to the post to keep this from happening, but if I do that, I have to pad their entire enclosure and I think they just need to get used to their new surroundings. After all, they have never had corners to deal with before at all.

So now I have one Del left, and not my favorite. I am sad, but I did order extra chickens incase I lost some, I guess it is so sad because it was my favorite.

This is my only Del left. If I loose him too, am I banished from the thread?
