Ok y'all, just back from Colbys baseball game and Landon just hollered from the coops (he was putting Pepper and the girls to bed). Looks like I now have 2 ADDITIONAL Broody hens.....uuggghhhhh

NOW what do I do?

Sugar, my very slightly marked Del girl has gone "postal" and is acting like a turkey on hormonal steroids....and she is only like 6 months old. She is still in the nest box as of 830pm tonite.

And, my "been acting really weird for a long time" black rock girl has decided that its her turn too! So, as of 830pm tonite SHE is still in the nest box.

Guess I'll be going out to get some cheap plastic dog kennels to use on these 2....good gracious, who's idea was it to get chickens anyway??

Ahhh you were just missing me Cyn! Actually mine are chunksters too, at least some of them and Michelle thank you for posting your pics and Jesse McDaniel's name. I couldn't remember his name only his seller name!

I bought and hatched eggs from him too. They are nice! And ours look so much alike it's amazing! I thougt you had older ones from him?

Are these his stock and your own babies from the eggs? All my girls are laying but I can't decide on the 2 roos to keep so I haven't bred anyone yet but the hens are awesome.

I would love to see some pics of any older ones you have. And you are right, there just isn't anyway to cull them. They aren't flawed in my eye.

Cyn Your two boys are on my favorite list along with the JCMDan and one other seller Freeibeme (?) I think it might come down to combs because body type is great on them all. I have kept 5 with potential.

If I can get them to stand still for pictures maybe you can help me pick too? The whole "wing carraige" confuses me. But I do know a nice chunk when I see it.

Germaine, I don't know if this will help you to decide on who to keep, but I thought this information may help:
Half of my flock is from freeiibeme (from ebay) and 2 of my girls from that group have recently gone broody. They have good size and decent markings. My roo from that group has a 6 point comb but is a good size with nice markings. He is not as white as I would like him to be, he has some bleed through red in him. I kept him to breed to my girls that are Isaac daughters.
Johnny's (thats my roo's name from freeiibeme) daughters should inherit the broody gene from his line and the color should improve with the genes from my Isaac girls. I also have an Isaac son ( Ben) to breed to my girls from freeiibeme. Ben has awesome color, wing carriage and size and the best personality. His only downfall is his tail. It's not the right angle, too high. But between the 2 bloodlines I should get some lovely offspring. Like I said, I'm offering this info to help. You know your birds better than anyone, and know what goals you have. Does this help or did I make it worse and complicate things for you?
Edited to add: I would love to show you pictures of my gang, but my pc isn't working and I'm using the internet through my nintendo wii. It has very basic capabilities and I can't download with it.

OMG Sugar is STILL on the nest this morning!! I found her with a "mouthful of feathers" this morning. I guess one of the other girls must have gotten too close. She is acting like a holy terror

I sure wish they had decided to do this a month or so ago. I need more chicks right now like I need a hole in my head (or another broody

I have a few BR and White Rock eggs in the bator (will be 7 days on Sat) guess I'll build her a broody pen and give her a few of those. At least I won't be adding to "the chick count". Jennifer is gonna KILL me if I keep building pens....although SHE was the one wanting broody girls to raise their own babies. Guess I can blame it on her

At least my black rock girl was off the nest this morning, but I really think she's gonna be next. She's so fickle right now she can't make up her mind what she wants to do.

I found a post that shows how some people have built breeding pens, so that is what I built for the first broody. Guess I'll be running to Lowes to get lumber and build another. At least the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend. Here is a pix of what I modeled a broody pen after....I sure hope it works. Its in post #3 and I tucked it into a shaded area up near the rest of my coops

Tails are tricky too! Some of the roos tail feathers are short still and although I have been told they will grow in, it's hard to tell what angle they may go when they do grow in. Up or out...

My old Del Roo has alot of discoloration from the sun and I am wondering if that is simply a breed issue. My White Rock Roo is still wonderfully white and he is outside in the sun all day long. I don't understand why their is that color difference.

I really appreciate your help! And I think you must boardline on genius if you can figure out how to access the internet through your wii!
