Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Scott stop that whining man...some of us would KILL for a broody. I had one that started over the edge....then I get my Suede eggs from Cyn and she rolls them away repeatedly

I had to buy an incubator. So I will not listen to your whining *sticks fingers in her ears and hums loudly* lalalalalalalalala BY the way, the feathers are probably hers...they will pull their breast feathers to sit on the eggs.

I voted for "Her Royal Henliness: although Sensei Hen is good too.

Thanks, Ladyhawk! Scott, just deal, buddy. Last year, I had seven hens go broody (Dusty was twice). This year, only Nugget has gone over the edge. In fact, tomorrow is Day 21. At midday, there were no pips, but these are Orps. They make you wait.

You got it all done! What's the next project?

On the vote ..... Man that was hard, there are too many perfect ones!
I voted Queen of BYC. I figure since she is Queen of the Flock now, it would be a promotion to be Queen of BYC !

Scott .... I hear ya! I now have FOUR broodies! I hate to even go out and look tomorrow, as I am sure there will be yet another one! Well, they are all sitting on Delaware eggs, since quite a few people are interested in obtaining chicks. I did slip 6 little Silkie eggs in, too. I know Cyn has been wanting some, and I figured I would just do that for her.

I spent ALL day working outside with my chickens. I cleaned ..... get this ...... 13 pens and coops, between yesterday and today! I mean everything from dusting, scrubbing, sanding, spraying, scooping, all new bedding, and I powdered every single chicken (don't ask how many!). I relocated many of them, and they are not happy about it. I have 2 broodies in the rabbit hutch type coop, one broody still in her own nest in the breeder pen, and one broody stayed in the big coop (which used to be the layers coop, but now houses the babies from Claudia's and Shelley's Delawares, James' Buckeyes, and Karen's Lavender Ameraucanas). Tomorrow I will move the last 2 broodies to their own quarters, and hope there are no more!

Just be sure to have a brooder ready in 3 week, Cyn.

Vitamins? Naw, straight caffeine! (AND, Motrin tonight!)

Oh man, I loved picking up every single chick and handling them. Amazing how those Orps grow! Oh, and the little Barred Rocks are just precious already. One of the RIR chicks actually grabbed a piece of skin and bit me! Little devil would not let go either. Cute now, but he had better not try it later! It was a great day. I really do not mind cleaning coops. It feels so good when it is done.

Since you mentioned it. I had been wanting to post that my last hatch of 14 Dels, all had really nice yellow legs and feet. I don't know why. Previousl hatches have yielded chicks w/ green legs and feet as you may or may not remember me asking about.
Also I know one of them used to lay funny shelled eggs. Which I posted pics of. Big and wrinkley. I don't know what I did but she hasn't been laying those eggs for quite awhile. I know because I had all the Western NY dels seperated and some days I'd get 4 perfect eggs.
I'm going to be hanging on to currently hatched chicks til the mature enought to sex. I may hatch throughout the year just to keep raising new stock.
I was wondering since it's most likely the roos from your eggs will be mature enough to breed with my current older hens by the end of summer. Would it be ok to hatch eggs from those breedings? Even though the roos are young and the hens are cougars? I thought that I would breed Nick to the hen from your eggs and the roos from your eggs to each of the 4 hens I have.
Is there a breeders notebook of sorts? I've clearly have to keep records or it's going to get confusing and at my age it doesn't take much.

I don't know about that.... I have 7 that are broody right now and they are a pain in the keester to get the eggs out of. One is the Dark Cornish which surprised me, 2 Marans, 1 Buff Sussex, 1 Cochin and 1 Bantam Frizzle cochin, 1 bantam ameracuana

I would like more eggs, less broodies

Sure, Tim! Isaac has a stable full of much older women himself. They are nicer to him than his younger girls.

I've read that it's best to wait til a hen is older before hatching her egg, but is it ok if the roo is young? They won't be quite a year by the end of summer. Of course I'll wait for the hen to be older. Her eggs won't even be a decent size til next year.
I have to say I've had these hens for over a year and I expect they were at least that when I got them, but they are still laying nice eggs.
