Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

My son recently did a school speech on chicken raising, he brought his favorite Speckled Sussex Rooster Arthur, a Splash Ameraucana hen and a Buckeye youngster. This allowed him to talk about skin color, feather color/genetics, egg color, body types, unique feathering (beards, muffs, discussed legs without an example) combs and wattles...

None of the kids who were not in 4-H had ever seen anything but a white chicken. They were all scared of the rooster, though he was on his very best behavior. They were all shocked at the diversity.

Ack she posted a pcture of me....

I am too tiny....I look like death warmed over but that WILL change I shall reach 140 lbs one way or the other dang it!

paaz I am so glad you trimmed the nails...that has got to feel better for her. With her foor and gait being so off, she will not be able to file them down normally so you will have to do manicures for her. As for the leg...I really do not know if you can do anything. If you know of one and can afford it, you could have a vet exam her and get a good professional opinion. If not, go to one the of the vet sites online and ask the question....show them the pics and see what they recommend.

I am glad she will be a spoiled special needs girl...she is so cute and sweet looking.

Yard full o' rocks :

Glad y'all had a great visit.....I'm SURE no one at your place (chickens that is) were spoiled at all, right??!!

Have a great day

Of course they were spoiled rotten....I had to spoil them to get them to follow me to the car. I even took some quiet time with Suede (when Cyn and Tom were not looking) to explain the air conditioing and seat belt safety rules to Suede for his ride to Kentucky. I did this only after allowing him to eat an entire blueberry muffin by himself of course.

I might add and mention that not only did Suede eat this entire muffin WITHOUT calling for his girls but he sent crumbs flying all over both Cyn and myself.

To keep this thread Dellie related ahem Isaac loved his muffins and seed block.

And let us discuss the Dellie heathen females. I was sitting there at the fence talking to Dutch who was trying to bite me but found that I still would not go away and not only would I not go away, I reached in the fence and petted him in retaliation for his bad behavior. Well, He suddenly turns sharply to his left and raised up so I looked to see what he was reacting to...it was the cannibal Georgie. That wench was cocking her head and darn near drooling over his wattles hanging there. Dutch turned to jump away, I reached through the fence and thunked her on her beak while telling her "Oh no you don't" and she was still staring at him stalkingly, so he jumped away and I thunked her again telling her "Stop that you meanie". She did not know what to think about this stranger scolding her and daring to thunk her beak for trying to eat her rooster.

Now my sweet little Dellie girls will never do that. They are quite charming and mannerly. I just know they will not resort to this kind of behavior. Then again, you recall, my girls all inherited the sweetness gene that some Dels lack.

Kathy, I am so glad to hear that your Dels have the sweetness gene as I anxiously await my first candling in a few days. Temps are holding tight, and humidity hanging out at 50 % I am hopeful

Yes, Georgie is quite, well, challenging for any rooster! And Cetawin has neglected to tell you about the Mouth of the South, my Maxie. Minimum color, maximum volume! As a friend said to me, "She sounds like a wee cow", LOL.

Yes but Maxie was quiet all weekend really...she never went into her "Maxie Screamfest" I kept waiting for it.

That Georgie was a snot though wasn't she? I mean she was plain out stalking that boy's face and even with him wanting to bite me for a moment I was not gonna sit there and let her go after his face. mean ole woman.

BTW: DeDe is doing great. She laid her egg and has been very very sweet...can you believe it? She let DH reach in and pet her and all she did was give him the "cluck off" and she has started standing and coming to the side of the crate when I come in and say "Hi Delilah how are you?" She is going to be just fine Cyn.

Hope all goes well for you!
I know people use different humidity settings. I hatch the dry method way. I incubate with 35% humidity and then up to 60 - 65% on day 18 until hatch. I have pretty good luck with this. I think alot has to do with the elevation in which you live. This is just what works for me.

Good luck!

Chks- my Dellie girls are as sweet as pie, too. They do not pick on anyone's wattles or combs- hope your hatch is successful!

Cetawin, glad you made it home safely and that Delilah is settling in so well.

It was almost 100 here yesterday- everyone got cold yogurt and grapes - they stayed pretty comfortable.

Harriet is still sitting on those Dellie eggs-
