She is so entertaining; she keeps life interesting, for sure.

OK! OK!! I get it! I get it!!! I said they're at the TOP of my list, didn't I?!?!

Just as soon as there is room, I'd love to add a SMALL handful! Mind you ladies, I have pre-qualified that by saying A SMALL HANDFULL of Dellies. At some future date, maybe as early as next spring, I'd really like to add say three or four of the little darlings.

Beth, your momma and her wee ones look so happy in their new home!
love.gif
I simply adore seeing a momma with her chicks! And like Neeley says, they grow up so fast. Be sure to get lots of pictures every day.

My one regret with this motley little mob of mutts of mine was in not taking more pictures, more often as they were growing up.

Kathy, your boy is absolutely beautiful!! And I think his tailing is coming along splendidly! I've gotta laugh at that first picture! It took me a moment to realize that I was seeing FOUR chickens and not just THREE!!
gig.gif
I thought maybe you were going for some new stretch limo version of Dellies there girl!!

Beth! You hang on to that roo boy of yours for dear life! He's a keeper for sure! I did something similar day before yesterday when I tripped over one of the many rocks in the yard while taking out a load of laundry to the line to dry. Me, the basket and all of the clean linens went sprawling on the ground and I bunged up my knees pretty good. While I was still flat out on my belly, cussing a blue streak, Chief came running over to stand over me. I wondered what he was up too!

Now I know!

Ya just gotta love these big beautiful boys!!

REALLY? Now, I gotta say ..... I have only had chickens for a little more than a year. When I heard Ladyhawk's stories of Thor, well.... I was just amazed that a chicken would act this way! A CHICKEN for heaven's sake! Are you kidding me???? When this happened to me today, I can not even describe what I felt. It was like the way you feel when your dog is "protective," of you, and you love him for it. Honestly, I am just AMAZED!!! A CHICKEN???? WHAaaaa .... Shock and disbelief !

Well to be honest Kathy, I was just as much struck dumb with amazement myself! I thought for sure he was coming over to look down at me, assess the situation and then start rolling on the ground in delighted rooster laughter at my clumsiness!!
lol.png

I mean, seriously, he's a CHICKEN! Who would think them capable of such compassion and caring. I've always known that my girls have that capacity. But that's different....that's maternal instincts kicking in as I figure it.... but to see it in one of the boys!?!

Like I said, I was struck dumb with amazement at his actions and figured I must have been mistaken. Only one roo I've ever known has been capable of that kind of empathy for his human, and sadly, he is gone (R.I.P. Thor

) Maybe more of our little men are capable of this depth of attachment to us than we give them credit for?

Kathy- you bet Jacob was watching out for you- he was guarding your back while you were down- GOOD BOY!!!!

And yes, I really like the solidity of that young Mr. RooTwo- nice comb, nice expression big chest, nice wing set, all the things Cynthia said- and still very innocent looking- looks like the tail is coming along- he may not have the elegance of Jacob and Mr. RooOne,or at least not at this point, but he looks like he will be a rock! For some reason I think he is from Claudia's bunch, and Mr.RooOne is Isaac's- he already has the elegance that Isaac and Jacob have- Luke has that also- and Mr.RooTwo just seems different -

Those little babies of mine sure had the day- Harriet kept them scratching away in the dirt all over the pen, which is about 12 x 12- I kept thinking little Belle for sure was just going to collapse from exhaustion, but they seemed to love it. AND Harriet found her way into the little coop and tucked up with the babies all by herself. I thought I would have to stuff her in there, but she evidently realized we were making a switch. However, Katia and Valentina discovered they have wings, and they were roosting on top of the gate between their area and Harriet's- which is over 4 feet tall- guess I need to do something about that!

Cannonball was going to cool down that owie- it was probably stinging- silly chicken! I just love her!

Serrin- you realize a "handful" of Dellies is at least two dozen, don't you? I am sure I read that somewhere!
lol.png

Cyn, how is Panda doing? And her little ones? There was no action on that thread. And is Isaac totally healed?

That is exactly what I was thinking. Since they all originated from Janet's stock though, could be either one. I really do like them both. It's gonna end up with a coin toss, for who to keep, I am thinking.

Here is my Delaware, we got her this morning. I went to the feed store for 3 barred rocks and came home with this little girl and two barred rocks. My husband just HAD to have her. My daughter named her Blondie.

I don't know anything about Delawares (yet) but we picked her out because of all the dark feathers on her wings. She was just too beautiful! Is that not the standard? I noticed all of the others had mostly white.

kmwright- welcome to Dellie world!!! Your little one has the attitude!!!! The "I will control your mind and you will do my will" look is there, alright!
gig.gif

Seriously, they are wonderful, personable birds. If you have some time, read through some of the stuff on this thread and you'll see why we all love ours. And you will see pictures of what your baby will end up looking like. They change a lot over time, and your baby may surprise you in the final result.
Please keep us posted, with pics, of that little sweeties development!

It has been sometime now since my last post. At that time I was wrestling with the idea that my Delaware bantam maybe not be a Della but a Del. I am almost certain it is a Del. Still no comb after nearly six months and he/she does not squat like the other pullets when handled or approached. Still a very gentle bird, I've become totally enthralled and have agreed to buy 5 more bantams at an upcoming show. I think since this bird came from a hatchery it coumld have some flaws or defects that prevent it from developing in a normal fashion. He/she also wheezes in this God awful heat and humidity we've been having. Cooler temps, and he/she is fine.

Have any of you crossed your Dels with New Hampshire Reds or RIR and could you post pics of the offspring? Unless I've missed those pics on the thread.

I am also looking for a source for Light, Speckled, Buff and maybe Coronation, BANTAM Sussex. I would prefer chicks or starts. Is there anyone who could steer me in that direction?

Thanks for your input!

kmwright - that is an adorable little Dellie. Now I must give you the warnings regarding Dellies *ahem*

1. BEWARE of Dellie Mind Control. Yours is doing it already. NEVER look them in the eye. They will have you slaving for them, jumping to do their will and giving them whatever they want, when they want it...and it happens quick.

2. Never leave food where a Dellie can see it...you will lose it

3. Watch for any open windows on either home or vehicle...they will try to get inside

4. Never let them come inside to watch TV..not even once....you will never get rid of them.

5. Your Dellie specifically-I give you this warning. She will steal your husband's heart so watch out. She will become the other woman in no time...she will run to him, jump on him, talk to him and think it is normal to follow him everywhere if you are not careful.

lol.png

They are naturally mouthy and must taste everything...they are the most mouthy curious things I have ever seen. If there is one dime in your yard somewhere....the Dellie will find it and try to taste it but they are so ubber friendly...you are gonna love her.

Kathy & Serrin - see ya'll thought I was kidding about Thor huh?

There are certainly some special boys out there. Glad you two have such special boys too. Now lockdown for me is tonight/early tomorrow so keep your fingers crossed everyone....I am praying for my new flock leader. A big ole Son of Suede.
