Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Thanks! I got day old chicks from Country Hatchery in OK. I was very pleased with how nice most of them turned out in looks but over half of the Roo's were not as meaty as the other half. It just may be that the larger ones did not let the smaller ones eat as much. He is very friendly and does come right up to you but I usually don't pet him. I pick up the girls and pet them as they are about half the size he is. I will get some more photos of the girls on Sunday as I'm heading out of town for a few days.

I am originally from Washington State along the coast! I have lived in Texas for 23 years now but all my family is still in Washington. I have a daughter and 2 Grandkids in Spokane too.

Here are a couple more photos but I don't think the camera angle is any better. I will have to get my husband to distract him because if I try to get down to his level he won't stay far enough away for me to get a good photo. He does have good tail barring and no smut. The wing set is hard to tell as it was 98 degrees out when I took these so they were not being carried like they are in the mornings.

I will get more photos on Sunday. I appreciate your advice.

Thanks,
Belinda

Belinda!!! OMGosh! You absolutely MUST start cuddling that boy!!! If he's still that friendly at five+ months and mating his girls, you still have a good chance to make him a lap roo!!

And trust me.....Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING beats a sweet, cuddle me now please, Lap Roo!!!! You'll never regret it!

Just start slow. When he comes over to you, try stroking his back. If he shies away, then don't push the issue. Just keep working with him a little every day. Night time is a good time to work with them as well.

I had one boy who wouldn't let me near him during the day, so I started working with him under cover of darkness. Within about two weeks, I had him to the point where he'd just scoot away a little, rather than run screaming across the yard every time I reached out to him. I still can't just walk up to him in the daylight and pick him up if he's out in the yard. But in the coop, he's putty in my hands!

At this rate, I figure casually walking up to him anywhere and picking him up is still a couple of months off yet. My boys will all be six months of age in the first week of September. So you see, there's still hope for your wonderful little man!

Start cuddling him TODAY!!!!

Belinda, he's got a great comb, a nice 5 pointer. (Maybe 6 points at second glance?) Overall his plumage color is nice and consistent too. The major fault I see (on both the roo and your hens) is their leg color, it looks to be pinky-pearl colored in the photo when it should be a bright yellow. It might be the photo but his tail set looks a little high as well, almost squirrel tailed. However these things to me are all minor, easily bred out if you have the time. He's a nice meaty looking boy, something a lot of Dels tend to be lacking these days.

Where did you get these birds? A breeder or hatchery?

Good morning all!
Thanks "Lotsa" for the info. I would love to see pictures of your Dellies.

And thanks Belinda for sharing your pictures. They are really nice. I wish mine had that fantastic attitude.
My roo chases my little girl. He is a goner as soon as I can. I hate to get rid of him though, because he is beautiful.

I posted this in breed and sex section also.
I also want opinion from people in the Delaware section.
I hoping 2 pullets.
thanks

This is 2 Delwares chicks, it is 3-4 weeks old. Pullet or rooster?

Kathy your very welcome....who did you get your stock from if I may ask?

I have to admit I'm getting sucked in by that Delware mind control thing you guys keep mentioning. I'm not a fan of white chickens. All I see is production birds when I see white birds or mostly white birds. But I keep coming back to these dang Delwares. I told myself I was going to do Chanteclers but I keep checking back on this thread and I see pics of birds like Oliver, Alexander, Belindas birds, and some of the other REALLY impressive Roos from pages back and every time I see one I say to myself "Wow thats a heck of a Roo wonder what his daughters would look like". I'm looking at them from the aspect of their original intent as a broiler/dual purpose bird. Thats what I'm looking for. Then I think about the ALBC status and that only reinforces the need to work with them too as both are listed as critical. I can only realistically do one breed and I keep checking back on this thread...its really bugging me.

The one concern I have regarding the Delware is frostbite on the combs/wattles. I know I can put petroleum jelly on them but how cold does it have to be in order for me to take preventive measures? And is the Roo the only one thats really a concern? Im in Michigan and frostbite is a real concern. Is an insulated coop enough? I planned on insulating it regardless, even caulking any seams on the coop with an exterior grade window caulk. Is this enough?
