Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Good job Kathy! At this point, the male has more positive traits than negative. I don't see any reason to get rid of him. Lets look again in two months. He may end up with a a bit too much black in the wrong places, but I can't tell yet. If he turns out well, the dark color will actually be an asset in your breedings. He is certainly a decent prospect if you want to know how he stacks up with the known winners. Only time will tell.

Got pips two days early. I just hope they make it. Hatch day is Sunday. I do hate when they don't zip fast though. I 've got some in the egg carton set up and some leaning up again the cartons. I knew there were pips cuz I could see things had moved a little.

These are all Dels as far as i know. I have one Ee in there that I think is laying beige eggs but Trish insists should be laying blue. She should be laying by now, everyone else is laying. All the new summer pullets.

Temps have been running high 100.2 or so. Now 99.6 and hum. is 60* was a little high when I first moved them but now ok.

Am I the only one who can't function or sleep til they are all done? Good garden o' peas! You'd think I had something to do with it.

Help me Jesus!

Beth, I have answered your pm, I look forward to meeting you.

kathyinmo, I am still very interested in your offer as well.

BYC has got to have the Best and Friendliest group of people anywhere. I have recieved a bunch of offers for eggs and I appreciate everyone of you.

Now I am going to put up a security system on my incubator so that nothing can possibly happen to this next bunch of eggs. I think when I put these eggs in the bator I will just go ahead and move out of the house for 21days, that way I cant screw this hatch up like I did the last two.

Thanks everyone!!

Bill

Tim, I have an Easter Egger that lays pale pinkish eggs. I have her in with my Marans and hope to make the pinkish color a bit darker. I dunno if it will work, but I wanna give it a try.

Hope your hatch is successful! Yes, I can hardly stay away from the bator when they are hatching!

Too funny David! I'd comment more, but I'm falling asleep at the KB right now. Time for bed! But I just couldn't let that one go by without some comment.

Keep the pictures coming. We love them!

UGH! hatching can be so frustrating. I now have 18 out of 25 hatched and today is day 21, but some hatched yesterday so the days may be off. At least two are pipping and started today. 4 started yesterday and they are stilll alive but can't get out. They are pipped all the way around. Others started today and just zipped and were done.

Its crowded in there and I'm at my wits end. They are just running around though calm down when the lights are off. All are Dels of course. Temps 99.6 and hum. is 71%.

Cyn, recommended this Gen. 1588 and it seems to do a good job.

I was concerned that some would be this way as I've read that after three years hatchability decreases. I'm sure some of my hens are over two maybe approaching or at three. It's important that I get as much heritage from them as I can, so I may gear up and start again right away. I really need to convert my gym into a broody house. It must be 25x25'.

Why is it summer flies by but winter seems to take forever. I guess I'll call it tomorrow, but what about the ones who struggle. Don Schrider says he just drops them into water and ends it but I don't have the heart. I suppose I could try to help them but if they aren't well I'll hate myself. How long do I give them to get out? UGH! hatching can be so frustrating.

Tim, if it's any help to you, I rescued one of my last hatch that wasn't able to make it out on her own. The humidity had suddenly dropped and she was getting shrink wrapped in her own shell. I only later discovered that I had a small leak in the reservoir of the incubator and that was what had caused the sudden drop in humidity, just as she was hatching out. She was the last one in that batch and I thought she could make it on her own. After about 12 hours or so, and not being able to get the humidity back up well enough, I finally pulled her out, placed her in front of my little space heater and started working on her. I used a spray bottle of warm water [about the same temp you would prepare baby formula at] and hosed her down so to speak. Not so much as to drown her, but just enough to loosen up the inner membrane and give her a chance.

I put her back in the incubator and watched for a couple more hours, but by that time it was apparent to me that she had used up all of the energy she had just in zipping her shell. So, I took her back out and worked at pulling the top off of her shell. I was most concerned about hitting one of those veins you hear about from other people who have had similar situations.

I was scared half to death that I'd accidentally cut through one of those and the poor thing would bleed to death right there in my hands. I finally got up the nerve when I figured, either I take that chance and she dies in the effort, or I leave her alone and she dies anyway. Long story short, I got her out and she was just as right as rain ever after that. She ate well and thrived. Today, she's a cherished little hen living with friends down the road, along with her other two hatch mates. [only 3 of the 9 eggs I had set ever made it in that hatch.

The moral to the story, if there is one, is never underestimate the will to survive. Even if they have a few set backs on account of their misadventures in hatching, give them the benefit of the doubt and help them. Chickens are incredibly tough little animals. Given just a half of a chance they can surprise the daylights out of ya!

I hope the eggs that are yet to hatch get busy and come bouncing into the world! The world NEEDS more Dels!!!!

Come on babies!!! Come on out! Time to rise and shine!!! Good luck Tim, and be sure to keep us posted!
