I can't wait. . . . . my garden is callling. . . . .

I don't think I am going to be able to have a garden this year with all the chickens. If I let them free range then it is destroyed. Last year they even went into my planters to nest!

That is too bad, Germaine- can you fence in the garden and let the chickens in after you harvest? I LOVE digging in the earth- and I love my flowers - I am building a pretty big run, and will only let mine free range when I am home, but if I have to I will put up some low fencing- gotta have my lilacs and lavender, lilies, etc. I love having the scent floating through the windows!

Beth, I love gardening too, but between chickens and grasshoppers and gophers I just am ready to give up. The grasshoppers are one of the reasons I wanted chickens. They are like a plague here. But if I let the chickens out to get them...they dig in the flowers and garden!
We will see what happens. I do have my perennial bed full of lavender and a big lilac tree. Lots of fruit trees too. Maybe I will try fencing in my raised beds?

Germaine, I would put some fence up- if they are raised beds, you probably wouldn't need a high one. When the neighbors dozen chickens free ranged at my place last summer, they actually didn't dig up too much. Never bothered my blueberries, either. I fenced in my raised asparagus bed and the squash garden but in as far as the flowers go, they only dug up where I had put in annuals and fresh mulch. Had my tomatoes in tubs, and they did pick those to death, so I am going to do a fenced raised bed there. I have already had my little Del babies reject blueberries, so hopefully they will stay away from my bushes. I guess if you want both, fencing is a must - ooh, wait till my DH hears I need another raised bed!

Actually, those chickens helped me weed, three of four were always at my side scratching through where I was weeding and getting worms and bugs. I just couldn't get them to quit scratching the mulch away from the plants! But they sure helped loosen the earth, and left a little fertilizer behind!

I do wish I could have as many chickens as you and Kathy do, it would be FUN.

50*+ yesterday, and this morning had a spring feel to it. I've been shuting the light off during the day. last night I forgot to go plug it on befor dark, and every one but broody Mother Hen was huddled up in the beam of light from the pole light,

it was cute.
Q? does anyone elses Dles chater? My roos are always talking, and Sweetheart. not the loud fussing like my RIRs {who think they mite like me now

} but soft friendly sounds/
And do teen roos act like teen boys? be all sweet until it hits them they are bigger then every one else, so they can act how ever they please? here lately they have been pushing the girl away from the food, and some times just to do it. most of the time the 3 of the RIRs come right back, and then Buggie, the last RIR and Sweetheart. I think Sweeetheart mite have a buddy with that last RIR, she is the only one I've seen her eat with.
I did get some pics of the bunch, but not much cuz the boys look kinda goofy right now with spiky necks and no tails. I got some of Sweetheart too. Her bald spot has gone from almost her whole head down to 1/8 x 1/2 an inch, and that is much smaller then I would have hoped for.

Good morning to you all! A bit windy here. ARGH... I hate the wind. It makes my sinuses go crazy.
Any ways, I am also planning my garden. Looking for quality herloom seeds. Anyone know where I can get some? I was thinking about heading over to
one of our sister sites, the garden one. Anyone get seeds over there?

Morning Dellie Fans. I am waiting patiently for the fog to lift outside so my adorable brats can go out for the day...we are supposed to be rain-free today. YAY

Reserve my SDWD flag until I get moved....but then it shall go on their coop. YAY

Crazylady, mine are fairly talkative- little chattering sounds, crooning, bleeps, burrrts, general muttering. And the teen roos are starting to feel their stuff- there has been some feather ruffling, bullying, and a great deal of stare down/stink eye going on, especially with one of them.

TACEYPERKINS- never been on the garden site. I am afraid to go there, it would be even more addictive for me than this place is! I want heirloom tomato plants this year, though. I have spring fever-

Speaking of witches/wenches, what are Ike's girls up to today, Cynthia?
