Shhhhhhhh, here are pix of the roo and 1 hen of the hens (parents) to the Columbian rock chicks I just got. Notice that as opposed to the Dels, the neck/hackle feathers are a solid black or solid black white white edging (roo) and tails are solid black on the roo as opposed to barred like our Del roo are.

Hope these pix help to show the difference a little bit.

Scott, I am so happy you finally got your Columbian Plymouth Rock chicks! That was just the coolest thing, finding those.

There are six Rocks in my brooder, 4 BBS and 2 Barred. There are a bunch of Ameraucana and Rock eggs pipped in the bator, too, maybe eight or so.

All four of my Del girls were eating eggs. I blocked off the boxes, even put up a curtain for a door, and started giving them lentils for a protein supplement, and doubled the size of their run. They seem to have stopped. I'm back to 3 or 4 eggs a day.

I am soooo glad you got some BBS rocks. My grown up girls from Halo are laying up a storm. I have 14 that are laying and we got 13 eggs yesterday!! Guess I need to start selling some of them.

Sorry you are still not feeling well. If you need medicine, have Tom go get it today!! Calling for 2-3" of snow down my way tomorrow!! No tellin' what you might get.

Got to deliver 6 del chicks to a gentleman in Rome, Ga today (he lives in Ft Payne, AL)....another SDWD member in the making!!

Thanks, Scott. I'm not 100%. Will be resting, watching the bator, drinking peppermint tea, etc. I'm rarely sick at all and this wasn't the best time for it, either. I want to enjoy my new chicks!

You CR chicks may not be the very best quality, but heck, they're actually CRs! And you never know, one of the chicks may be better than the parents. Those seem to be really hard to find, as much as Delawares with no CR blood in them.

I have to remember to drink two cups of coffee and be wide awake before entering BYC. LOL Scott. I looked at your CR's and thought you were talking about my Dels looking like them. All I could do was stare at the hackles and stare some more! Then the part about the tail came back to me and I re-read and realized you were showing off those beautiful Columbian Rocks! Too funny.
Are Columbian Rocks rare? The sure are pretty and they look huge!

Thanks everyone on the Columbian input. I am going to be able to look the Dels in the eye again! Now onto combs and body type!

As I was trying to sleep I decided that every breed has their own "people" description. Delawares to me are like kids who just got out for summer vacation. They have a zest for life and run around always looking and keeping busy-curious about everything--but happy to come back and hang out with you.

However the Roos have become very territorial of the girls ready to bust the chops of any other challenging roo. They don't even think before defending, they just attack. Scary.​

RWoman ... How are the roos acting towards you messing with the girls? Watch that for sure. That whole scene yesterday with Thor and my DH worried me until I got the whole story about him charging out the door and stopping. I have no problemo with a roo doing his job and checking stuff out but...it has to stop there when the family of humans is involved....especially a mini-tank like Thor.


Kathy - the thought of stuffing Dr. Robinson in the back of U-Haul has crossed my mind many many times...it is still a possibility. If so, I will need to swing by your place with him on my journey to KY. You cook lunch and I shall bring the vet

Hi LadyHawk, The Roos have been fine with me so far, but honestly I don't mess with the girls around them much.
The roos have their own coop. I am working on individual breeding pens but until then, they are doing the singles route most of the time!
It is when I put a roo back in the coop with them that they get nasty. They are just mad that it wasn't them who got out.

Laney- sorry I missed the post on your coop- I had to go back and look after someone else mentioned it- wow- that must have been some wind. Hope you don't get any more like that- it was bad here, but not that bad. Congrats on the 'bator!
Bassleg- yay! CHICKS!
Highspringschix- hope they really have stopped eating eggs- I hope I never have to deal with that!
Cetawin- yes, mouthy and touchy feely- a couple that hang on to my sleeves or pants. So far the roos let me pet and pick up the girls without even blinking at me, but the girls are always all over me and the first ones to come up, so maybe they still see me as mama or head roo? Who knows?
