You say 77* for you? Oh, it must feel like heaven! Sounds like Lizzie is adjusting okay then? I hope it all works out for her.

I am so worried about my chickens and this hot hot hot weather! I put ice blocks out, and ice in their water. It just seems to me that they are not drinking enough water. Much less feed, as well. They were out all day, and I hardly saw them, as they were in the timber and under shade most of the time. Alot of dust baths going on, too.

Tonight, at roost time, I see 2 of the girls and roo #2 were huddled in a corner. Back to that again, I guess. I picked each one up, and put them on the roost. I don't know why they do not go to roost. I had them broke of that in their other pen. I guess I will just try it again, in their new home.

Good luck with the roost thing - it seems to be hard to break- mine just won't do it! I feel like mine are not eating or drinking as much as I would like either. I set up some fruit cubes for tomorrow- strawberries and blueberries in water- will be cold and wet, so at least some liquid will get down them. I remember reading somewhere that chickens don't like super cold water, so maybe just keeping it fresh is better than ice water?

BTW, I think one of my BSL, Harriet, has gone broody- she has been in her nest spot all afternoon and when I got home just now and went to lock up the horse barn, she is still there, glazed over and staring into space. . . . . .hmmmm- I wonder if I should slip some Dellie eggs under her, even though I am taking a chance on them being mutts, since Ultrasuede is in there yet. . . . .

Cooled off here just a bit last night and I enjoyed a couple of hours of sitting by the chickens while they wandered around the yard. I just love that. Today is supposed to be in the 90's again. Perhaps some mellon would be in order for the chickens. That seems to be their favorite on a hot day.

I am excited about some Dellie eggs that should be arriving in the mail any day.(Thanks to Kathy) and cant wait to get them in the incubator. Stays pretty warm in this area into October so there still should be plenty of time for them to grow out before winter. I just hope they are ok in the mail, and that the weather didn't get to them. Keep your fingers crossed for the future little babies. Also, this is my first attempt at hatching so keep your fingers crossed for that too.

Harriet is broody? OMG, yes, you have to give her some eggs! Give it a try with the Delawares, I would say! Is this your first ever broody? It is so exciting!

Yep, already told the mailman (a wonderful person) that a package is on the way and he is looking out for it. Says he will deliver to the front porch instead of the mailbox. We usually get the mail at about 1:30 so we will see.......



1:00 eggs arrived!!!!!

Only one had a tiny crack--going to try to repair with wax and see what happens. So they are resting next to the incubator ready to be set tomorrow morning!

hi there,

my name is smudge, and i don't know what i am. do i belong here? i have a single comb, gray legs with pink toes, and a gray head and tail (obviously not show quality but we don't care about that around here). if i'm not a dellie, anyone have any ideas where i might belong? forgot to add - i'm 2 months old today.

You have a beautiful bird there, that is for sure. No, not a Delaware. Delawares have yellow legs. Wish I could be of more help, but I do not know what breed you have. Is it a pure bred or a mix?

she's from mcmurray hatchery so shouldn't be a mixed breed. she was completely yellow fluff when she arrived but her sisters didn't survive the mailing experience, they were kind of delicate. so i don't know if she was meant to be a packing peanut, or the "free rare breed", or since there was a set of several of them if they were actually part of the original order of colored egg layers.

My guess is that with the gray legs she may be an EE. Time will tell.
