Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I have 10 Delaware chicks in my new brooder.....

I put linoleum on the floor. It is far from perfect, but it will work well for my purposes. The bottom one will be occupied tonight, too!

I cut the top piece in half, and used hardware cloth on one side, for the heat lamp. I used a piece of wire and wired it in place.

They seem to be happy ....

Well, the truth is .......... I had not planned to brood chicks this winter. I (impulsively) stuck some Delaware eggs in the incubator. Nicole bought some, and these are the hatch-mates to hers. Soooooo, I am just gonna keep these. I am actually excited to have them, and anxious to see how they turn out now.

Very nice Kathy! You did a great job.

The other thing I have started doing with my heat lamp is that I cut the wire out on 3 sides (where I put the lamp) then I fold back the wire and set the bulb into the hole while the base rests on the wire.

It doesn't wobble that way and when I take the lamp off because they don't need it anymore then I just fold the wire back down and zip tie it shut.

I have also used the zip ties to make a "door" for the lamp bulf. The zip ties are the hinge.

What would we do without zipties and duct tape...? LOL

Kathy, how does heat get to the bottom portion? Do you have a lamp on a stand that shines through the door? I love the whole set up - I am going to have to try this.

Have you separated Jacob and Oliver so you know who's kids are who's?

Germaine, where have you been????? And why haven't you joined the Delaware club?

I don't have a heat light in the bottom one. If I do, I will either put it up in the corner, or rig up something through the wire door maybe.

No, Beth, I have not separated Oliver and Jacob yet. I do plan to do that for spring hatches though. Ohhhh, that makes me excited for spring!

I really like that brooder idea Kathy! I may just have to try and build one of my own.

ETA: I'm recycling my giant garage brooder (8ft X 4ft X4ft) into a 4ft X 4ft X 4ft outdoor broody/grow out brooder pen, thing soon. I'm pretty excited about it too!
