Cindi... I just purchased a few yards of cheesecloth today, along with a package of 4.5in round plastic canvas, that I am going to cut down to the O.D. size of a widemouth mason jar... For growing sprouts

Hello Everyone! New to the thread and I thought I would post something here since this is a Delaware thread. We don't have any Delawares right now, or any chickens for that matter but I'm really interested in learning more about the breed. One day in the future I would like to have a nice flock(? newbie sorry) of Delawares that we can collect eggs from and some that we can show. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Cammy,
welcome-byc.gif
and the Delaware thread! You've found one of the better sources for information and advice in the care and keeping of not just Delaware chickens, but all breeds as well.

Delawares are an awesome breed! Just ask anyone here!

We'll regale you for days on end with stories and pictures of our beloved flocks.

But be forewarned.

There is a little thing we call "Delaware Mind Control". Whatever you do, DO NOT look a Delaware chick in the eyes! It will be all over for you in an instant!
gig.gif
They latch on to your mind and you'll soon find yourself doing all sorts of strange things. Like building bigger and better coops! And going to shows in search of that perfect hen or rooster to help improve your breeding program. And buying every newfangled treat you can lay your hands on, just to appease the almighty Delaware!!!

Is it worth it? Oh yeah!! It's worth it!! Every cent and every second! It's WORTH IT!!!

cammy,
I second eveything Serrin said! I am pretty new as well (mine are now 5 weeks old). I just "for no good reason" decided to get some Delawares. Mind control even works from pictures in books I guess
wink.png
. I hope that some of the more knowledgeable people on this thread will give some good advice on where to get them. That is the tricky part. You might get something at your local feed store that is labeled "Delaware" but is likely not the best representation of the breed. It all depends on how obsessed you think you will become (my recommendation: aim on the higher end

). Itis probably worth it starting with good birds while you are add it.
Welcome to this very active and extremely knowledgeable and helpful thread. I have to warn you though. It is sometimes a little single minded. I think the members would throw me out if they noticed that I also own some NNs and actually have them in the same coop with the Delawares

Pffft! HA! You're kidding me, right? Oh dear me! We really have put that image out there I suppose. No dear, if you saw my flock, you'd know how far off of the mark you are!
gig.gif
Seriously! Not one single pure bred anything out there! Oh, well, maybe except for my dear sweet little Maggie the EE, mother of my two half breed Del girls. Mama is EE and daddy is a drop dead gorgeous Delaware. EE + Del = DELAWEGGERS!!!

So, no, nobody is going to look down their beak at you for having other breeds dear! Nor would we kick you out. If they kick you out, they gotta kick me too, and I doubt that's going to happen!

It's all good.

You just want to make sure that you keep each breed isolated from the others when you want to breed them. Purity of the bloodlines and all that you know!
wink.png
Excuse me for stating the obvious. I have a penchant for doing that!

Cammy, feel free to strike up a conversation with any of the breeders of Del's here. They really are a friendly lot and are more interested in preserving the breed than anything else. Good quality Delawares are a rare creature indeed. But, if you're seriously wanting to show, there are a good many folks around here that would be happy to help you get your flock started. Read through some of the more recent postings in this thread and you'll soon have a long list of people whom to approach on this subject. How soon are you planning on getting started? Do you have your coop built yet? How many do you think you want to start out with? Good luck! Can't wait to see pictures of your first birds!

OK, I am comming out from under the chair now. Thanks Serrin! Yeah I was kidding (partially
wink.png
) but now I am feeling all safe and welcome. Don't worry about the breeding. There will not be a Delaware without that beautiful neck plumage (NNxDel)! (Hmm, I might photoshop one for april fools day though...

Well... Went outside to open up the chicken hut and our chick brooder... One of my chicks was quite rigamortised

I pulled it out and have set it aside to review later; as I was just in a robe. Though; I did not see any signs of attack or anything. May have been crop bound? Hmmm... I'm waaay hummed. I hope it would have grown up to be a nasty roo. Even still; I would have preferred him on my supper table <sigh> Only thing that has been different in the past 24hrs is the old jicama that was tossed in with them.
