Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Thanks Kathy. I don't know what I am going to do with him. I think he has just started doing this since I put the welsummers in the breeder pen. The welsummer roo is the top ranking roo. I also have another del roo but he seems to be ok so far.
Right now I am sure they are all roosting so maybe things will be ok till early morning. I will go out and check again tonight.

Hello everyone... Take a look at my photobcket profile. There you can see a lot of pictures of my almost two week old Del chicks. My username is BVRNixChixEggs.

Laura, your coop is insulated, right? And you have electricity to it as well, yes? If you're concerned about frostbite to his comb/wattles for instance, you could provide him with a single heat lamp, just to assure that he'll be fine.

I know when we were hitting down around negative 15 about a month ago, the three boys out in the rooster coop did just fine. Only a slight case of frostbite on the very end tips of their points. Other than that, you couldn't tell that they had faced more than a week of minus overnight temperatures.

Do you have any petroleum jelly? You can use that to help shield his comb from the worst of negative temps as well. As for him being alone for a few nights, sounds like he's a bit deserving of an attitude adjustment. A few nights nights with no one to cuddle up with, might be just what the doctor ordered! And that holds true for any time he decides to be a little butt head!

Just out of curiosity, how old is this roo?

Serrin, most of the insulation was taken out when we re modeled the coop as it was nasty from mice and squirrels. I have been putting vaseline on the roos every evening and will probably do so again in the morning as it is going to be even colder tomorrow. I was thinking about putting a light in that area if I had to seperate him. I believe he will be a year in April. Thanks

Ok, I now have the bad boy in the storage area. I had to hang a light over the waterer and dump some shavings on the floor. He was not very happy about it. The temp in the coop is 20 degrees. I have yet to see it get below 20 in there.

Ok so update on my loud mouth Dellie. I peeked over my back fence to talk to some of my neighbors this afternoon. There is a senior apartment complex behind us and some of the ladis always sit at this table for coffee/tea/etc a few times a day. So I say "I noticed one of my hens is extremely loud and annoying and I just wanted to make sure"....

And that's as far as they let me get. They waved their hands at me like "honey shut up you know we don't mind." Then one of them says "when they aren't loud, we wonder if they are ok. Sometimes we peek through the fence (it's chain linkso it's easy to see through) and check on them. We call the white one Big Bertha."

I love my neighbors.

Doesn't having neighbors like that make life so much easier! I'm happy for you that you have such sweeties for your next door neighbors. You should invite them over for fresh scrambled eggs and tea some morning!!

They'd probably love the chance to get out of the center for a couple of hours, and I bet you'd have a marvelous time as well. I just love older folks....for the most part....when they aren't being crotchety that is!

The rest of us can only hope to make it as far as some of those old codgers have gone.

I would love to see Big Bertha, too!

Laura, he will be alright. Mine are in unheated coops and it got to -2 a few weeks ago- everyone was fine. I had to take some hens away from my Del roo when they molted, as he was a little too rough for them in a half naked condition, LOL! He does grab them pretty hard.
