Referring to the lacing on the hackle feathers on #1. It would be interesting to see what color the undercolor is on these.

Influence from Sussex? There is no Sussex in a Delaware. I guess I'm dense, because I don't know what you mean.

There was rumored that some folks mixed in light sussex in the hopes of improving the hackle markings on the delawares ... Hence solid stripes on the hackles are indictative of light sussex being mixed in....

editted for correct sussex...

Will explain as pure as I possibly can. There is no way of knowing that there is not light Sussex mixed in unless you have had the Delaware for many years. So called breeders will cross breed just about anything and then sell the offspring as pure. The laced feather on pullet #1 is indicative of either Light Sussex or Columbian Rock being involved.

Kim, After seeing the slate undercolor there is a possibility that Columbian rocks were involved.

Well, Kim's Delawares come from me. I have never used Light Sussex. I got my stock from 2 sources that got theirs from Janet Holtman. I am 99% sure Janet would never use Sussex either. If there was any Sussex in them it would have to be many many generations ago.

Well, I finally weighed my 7 Delaware roosters. They were 25 weeks old this past Sunday. I'd like to hear what you all think of these weights:

6 lbs 10 oz
6 lbs 8 oz
6 lbs 4 oz
6 lbs 1 oz
6 lbs 1 oz
5 lbs 14 oz
5 lbs 2 oz

Well, the SOP calls for weights, and they are still young. They are a cockerel until 12 months old....
cockerel: 7 ½ pounds
cock: 8 ½ pounds

I have said all along that I felt this stock was a bit lighter than my original stock. I have not weighed them though. This is the only cockerel I kept. We had the others butchered and they did dress out nice.

Thanks for all of the insight and opinions EVERYONE! I am just getting my feet off the ground with the Delawares and have THOROUGHLY enjoyed having them around...just to have them around. They are fabulous birds and I love them! I haven't really made any moves yet except hatch out some eggs and grow out some babies.(courtesy of our lovely Kathy who is very gracious and shared)..I have more time to sort through them and I am in no hurry to reach the finish line.

Kathy...if there is anything in there background it very definitely could have popped up from many many generation ago.....just the right combination of genes will trip the switch so to speak and hey I am the lucky one that got one! I don't mind and it's nothing that I can't work around. I will be on the look out for another rooster so keep your ears peeled.

Ummm- NH hens have black lacing on their hackles, why aren't we considering that that marking could come from that side of the family?

Cubalaya, that girl looks suspiciously familiar, do I have her mother? Looks like some good tail black there, I would love to see more pictures/different angles of her.

just wanted to show off my Dellie rooster hatched from Rebel Roosters eggs, he will be 4 months old on the 7th of this month, what do yall think about him ?
