Show off your Peas!

Birdrain2, Thor is definitely a hen. Muscle doesn't work exactly the same way in peas as it does in horses... Plus, they're young, you don't see a size difference until they mature (and by then they're already growing their train if they're a male). And even then it's not a huge difference.

I mean this in a nice way, lol, I really do.

As many here know, I've been really anal, perhaps a little OCD on weighing my peafowl and I have noticed that the healthy males at this age will be bigger than females the same age. It's not much, but they are definitely heavier, but I agree 100% with with you on the musculature, peafowl are not like horses!

A little off topic, but I remember reading someplace that geldings will actually end up a little taller than if they were left intact. Don't know how true that is, lol, so don't quote me on that.

Anyways, one of these days I will have to put all this weight data on a spread sheet, it's actually sort of interesting.

Oh, I don't doubt that males weigh more. That's how it works with most animals.

I was saying that visually, you can't see and compare muscle mass underneath all those feathers. I think it's awesome that you're weighing them! But among the girls, there's weight differences, too, correct? Not every bird is going to weigh the exact same, but on average, I'm sure males weigh more than females. :)

All my males even the once from last years hatch are bigger than the females, i did have a male once that was smaller than my peahens body wise but i lost him to a heart defect.
This young white peacock to the right is the same age as the pied hen .

Yes, given a set of girls about the same age, some will be heavier, but only by 100 grams or so. Of course there are exceptions, like when they're sick. What's interesting is Zazouse said she had a runt male with a heart defect, but my male that died from a heart defect was HUGE, so again, another exception.

Is it just me or am I the only person on this website that can see this feather came from a peacock. I've showed this to lots of people and they say male. The location on the neck is center of the neck.

Looks like it came from a purple pea , all i have is IB's and i have never gotten a feather colored like that from any of them male, female, young or old and i save feathers cause i sell them so i would have noticed something different in colors had it appeared.

I can't even say it came from a peacock if i just found one like that here.
So ya think ya got a rare and unusually new color in your heshe?

It would have to be mutation since they only have IB Pied blood. If it's a new mutation with this then this will be interesting to see what comes out of this.
