Show off your Peas!

Since peafowl are not as tame as chickens, perhaps they could judge the peafowl in something like a covered chainlink dog kennel? Of course the pea would still have to stand still to be looked over, but the risk of one flying away becomes a non-issue.

Are you talking about one of these?

Yes, with a small table in the middle that a judge could walk around. There is still a risk that they could fly up and get hurt, but it's probably safer than a tether.

This is what they use for Peafowl at the PA state farm show.

Free space and free movement. That does sound nice. Providing the Peafowl will stand still on the table and not get off while the judge is there.

Ok, we know tethering is bad and you highly don't ever recommend anyone to use one. Do you think the harness (like the one Zaz talked about) is the best way to go in restraining a Peafowl? Or are there other less harmful ways of restraint?

I think whatever genius came up with the tethering idea, was intending it's use for chickens. Chickens, if they can fly at all, are not strong flyers, they probably would not have the wing strength to take off fast enough and hard enough to pull their own leg out of the socket. Peafowl on the other hand are very strong flyers, and if you've ever tried to keep hold of one who was trying to fly away you'd know there is a lot more power there than a chicken has. If they are going to allow the showing of other breeds of poultry they should amend their rules to make it safe to show them. In this area the chain link kennels are used.

I'll agree, it does sound safer. At least, the way you and Kathy put it.

Tether wasn't ever made for chickens. It was actually for falcons, hawks, and eagles. Those are lot stronger flyers than a peacock. A horse can injure itself and the rider and possibly die from it. Perhaps we shouldn't ride horses either. Dogs can kill themselves with a leash and collar, perhaps we shouldn't have dogs with leashes but they could attack people. No matter what animals can kill themselves or get injured badly no matter what.

It's the animal's choice what they do and how they do it. We humans can't control everything life throws at us. We can control some things, but not everything.

This argument does not make sense in so many ways...not even sure where to start.

Of course, you are right, we can't ultimately control what an animal will or will not do.
However, can you really say that it is "the animal's choice what they do and how they do it" if a human puts the animal into a situation in which it has a strong probability of being injured?
It is 100% the human's choice to endanger the animal in this way. All anyone here is saying is, Why choose to put an animal in this kind of situation?
