When I trimmed the "proper" way, they could still fly, but not far. This time I trimmed the primaries and secondaries and they can't fly, but they can still hop up onto stuff.

I do not know about wing trimming but my cameo hen got into the puppy pen once and they pulled out all her tail feathers and she had about 3 long wing feathers left on each wing and she was still able to fly up in the tree and on the feeding platform with no problem of course they can jump 6 foot straight off the ground with just one flap of their wings.Lovely babies! They are all maturing so quickly!![]()
So, tell me, is the wing trimming working? I have heard they are very strong flyers so wing trimming doesn't usually help. I trim only one wing on my Muscovy and it helps a lot but they are chunky monkeys whereas peas do not seem to have any fat on them.
Lol!!! The ones I have suffer form the after affects of frostbite. The momma and daddy were allowed to free range through a Maine winter last year and are missing parts of toes. They are housed in a well insulated building and I run a heater for them twice a day to keep the temps up around 40 degrees. Their babies don't seem to mind cold temps but the momma and father do. You can see them suffer if the temps. get too low. I've made a heated perch for them and it has helped a lot!A heater, lol. I need to make a nice shed for mine, 'cause right now the five sit on my back porch begging to come in. If I let them, all five will perch on the couch in front of the TV and fireplace. I felt sorry for them this morning, so they got to spend several hours inside. Thanks God for hardwood floors!
