Show off your Peas!

msmolly - They really do like the pool actually, more if the kids are playing in it. But the other day they never came home after being out all day and the next day we found them in the neighbors barn. it was so hot they were gaping for air. we finally coaxed them down and they followed us home. when we got in the yard they were clearly thirsty, went 24 hours with out water, they went for the pool, two - MA and Georgia actually jumped in. its only just above their bellies. and they stayed in drinking for quite a while, at first they seemed thrown off by landing in water, but then they didn't care. Never heard of this before and I wish i had my camera but I didn't. it was good to see them cooling down and getting refreshed.
But in short yes, they love the pool. they use it to drink from and always hang out around and on it when the kids are in. however since then they've been cooped waiting on their new pen. so i'm not sure it would have happened again. sorry it didn't quote idk what happened.

All your birds are lovely! I have a question though, I noticed that you are close to the road, do your peafowl (and other birds) ever wander out onto it? Peafowl are naturally so curious that I would be afraid they'd try and go say hi to the cars passing by? How many peas do you have?

ya we are too close to the road actually, it was fine for a while but their circle has grown as they have and sadly we're building them a pen now :( they have displayed at cars and have gone in the road and people stopped and shooed them off :( not safe. ppl drive really quick on our road. I hate penning them but even without the road, our neighbors barn is to close, cant loose them all the time.
oh and the chickens do not have this problem...

sorry, we have 5 peas, our first ever, had them a year since they were a day old, well actually had 4 day olds, one died - the white one of course - so we got the bs pair at 5 months old.

Wow autumnmfisher it is good to see you back and all of your pretty birds! It is too bad that you have to pen them, but they can still have fun in a pen. I tried free-ranging some peahens not too long ago and all they wanted to do was get back into the pen!

QUESTION - building a pen for the peas - going to use grape posts n chicken wire and put grape posts across the top and my plan is to grown wisteria at opposite corners and kiwi vine at the other opposite corners and let them cover the top and look pretty. I'll trim them back of course and make sure the peas get sun and they're not just in shade. question is - do peas have problems with either of these plants? and has anyone else ever done this? if so did it work good? I think it will be beautiful. if it doesn't work I can just cut them dead, the plants that is and leave the top the way we built it.

That's hilarious! I thought they'd be like the chickens and come back to the coop at night. that did not work. every night we have to go out at dusk and lead them in. i'm to afraid to leave them out over night. when theirs snow on the ground we see coyote prints around the coop, so we know they're around :( wonder if they're going to realize the chickens are free and they're not? I feel bad, but its for their own good :(

I down't know about either of those vines for sure, but I'm growing Honey suckle on my chicken coop, and its thriving. There are several types and I know a couple have flowers that can be made into tea for humans, so I figure its safe for the birds. I have two different kinds of honeysuckle vine( i know one is the Tea kind) that are 2 years on the coop now, and all my birds are alive....
Now, for more instant gratification,(untill your vines get going) a catalog called" Improvements" or maybe its the one called "Solutions", anyway- go online, and they sell 8' sheets of fake ivy that are meant to "beautify" chainlink dog fences. I have it over part of my chicken pen, to cut down on the sun(and snow). Its woven vine-like, so you can still see through. Its really meant to put up the sides, but I use it for the roof. It's actualy not bad looking and people always ask me where I got it. Good luck
