Show off your Peas!

I don't know, so am asking. After having it this long, won't it need to be opened up and the junk in there removed for him to heal?

I'm thinking the same thing, I mean the OP did say it's been like this for months.

@cajunfowl0 , here's what I suspect is the problem. Even though the original antibiotics may have cured the active infection, the pus and debris that ends up in the sinus can get stuck and make a big mass of hard gunk. The same thing can happen with children who have ear infections. The gunk gets stuck in there and can't drain away.

In kids, it's called a glue ear -- it's like the ear inside the eardrum gets filled with thick stuff that can't be drained through the eustachian tubes. Sometimes if the eardrum ruptures, it can get out that way, other times they have to have surgery.

That gunk is likely to keep your pea's face swollen (and it could get worse, or the infection could recur) until it gets cleaned out. Your bird probably needs surgery to remove the gunk. There's info on BYC and also UPA on how to remove it (if you are up to it yourself), otherwise, I would take the bird back to the vet and get the vet to do it. I have read of peas losing their eyes from this... all that pressure in the face is not good.

If it had gone down right away when the first infection occurred and the first antibiotics were given, all would have been well. But sometimes, even with appropriate antibiotics used for appropriate periods of time, the stuff just gets trapped in there, and once it gets thick enough, it can't get out, and the body can't really re-absorb it. When that happens, surgery is probably your only option.

Sorry
