Show off your Peas!

I remember clearly being told that Spaldings will not breed true. If there are 5 males hatched from that last breeding Dany posted, they could all look like they have different amounts of green blood, even though on paper they should be identical. Some will show the green traits more than others.

Thank you for that. My concern right now is to whether I should call him out on the 75% or just accept the birds as is. BTW he just told me that both pair of Spauldings are two year olds as he didn't have any more yearlings when I went to pick them up, (gave me same price as yearlings).

It would certainly be nice if breeders had pedigrees for their birds the way they do for pure bred dogs. Then we could possibly check these things out, however without that sort of proof, I don't really know what you could achieve by "calling" anyone out. We have only the breeders word and no real way to prove anything, so you could just end up creating hard feelings with no gain. It is of course your decision to make. If I were to guess without knowing any background, I would have guessed that Cameo spalding from Rocking BAB was higher than 75%, he's a beautiful bird. The neck feathers on your young spaldings do resemble my 50% spaldings, but if they do not breed "True" that doesn't really mean anything.

50% spalding at 2 yrs.

So you are saying that these birds were misrepresented to me? BTW, he said that his greens came from Germany. I was hoping that the mature color would come in next year....
It is true that spaldings don't breed true, however, every 75% bird I have seen has more green characteristics than yours. How well do you know the breeder.?

'Calling out' was a poor choice of words on my part, I meant calling him and talking to him about it. But then after him telling me 75% and me seeing them I asked a second time just to make sure and he reiterated the same. I am going to accept what you said about not breeding true, watch how they molt, and enjoy them as they are.

In all fairness and after going back out and looking at the birds, the pictures I took don't do them justice. Those pics were taken indoors and in person they do show more green although muted. When I can bring them out of isolation after medicating, I will post more pics in the sunlight. Right now they show the results of being in a large flight pen with MANY other birds and are not only picked, but ruffed up from the trip in the cages.

Gonna get him tomorrow morning!

Gee, are you going to isolate him and treat him for worms and cocci?
