show quality speckled sussex ??

Would like to state again that it will be almost impossible to breed good SOP type SS unless you get a copy of the SOP. If you do not want to spend the money for the new version, check on the internet and buy a older model. I still am using the 2001 model. These only come out at about 10 year intervals.

All the cockerels are from the same place. The pullets are from two different places.

I think the roach back looking picture is from when he was standing on one leg - - mid step. I will look tonight to verify that there is not a roach back issue.
Most seem to have high tail issues... They are pulling each other's tail feathers out so quickly that some I can not be sure about.

There are a couple with lower tail sets.... BUT this could just be a submissive issue.

Some of the pullets have lower tail sets....
Would it be possible to mate one of these high tail boys with a low tail female and produce a son with a better tail set ? ?

This is a cockerel with a lower tail set...
This is Mr. No Number. There is one more cockerel still left to evaluate....

Tell me what you think about this one...

Lisa, Just looking at him he looks nice, but the disclaimer he has a twisted Comb and uneven serration. The white spangles are entirely too large. I believe he will have too much white in the tail section to be of any use in a serious breeding plan. Lisa, I know you are wanting SOP type SS so will not be recommending breeding any of these Hatchery Fowl as it will just not work out for you.

For the other people just wanting some SS and do not care about the SOP these would work great for you. Just remember it doesn't cost any more to try for the best than it does to raise a bunch of just chickens.

Just a thought would anyone be willing to show the undercolor on some of the with all the white ? Just hold up the Back and even the hackle feathers. I think I know what the color will be but sure would like to see a picture.

Just remember the color should be SLATE , shading to Salmon, the Salmon shading to light grey at Base.

Roger that. I have spent the last 3 months trying to find SOP SS to no avail. I've googled for days on end, sent emails to various people, made some calls, nothing. My daughter went to one county fair and I went to another, and neither one had any chickens at all, just a few cows and sheep. Guess I'll try that Poultry Press too. I just figured that by the time I find any I might be an old man, so went ahead and purchased Ideal SS just to have some.

I tell you what, and maybe it's just me, but it seems that if you aren't a "somebody" in the chicken world some people don't want to fool with you. Many talk about saving the breed, but won't give you the time of day when you talk to them. Reminds me of some gunsmiths I know. Talking to you is not worth their time except to tell you how great they are. I've found people claiming to have SOP SS for sale and when I talk to them they suddenly just had their birds wiped out by predators or something. Or else they won't even answer me back. I think they want to be able to brag about who they sell them to just as much as people want to brag on who they got theirs from. I know that wouldn't be everyone who raises SS, but it has happened to me several times. And of course, another problem is most breeders cannot ship birds to Virginia because of our poultry laws. And as for Virginia, I've found TWO people who have some. One has one rooster, and the other has a few hatchery birds. Good birds must be awfully hard for lots of people to come by though, because out of all the pictures posted on this site of SS, I haven't seen anyone call any of them a show quality bird yet. Might have missed one though.

But I'll keep looking. My best bet might be to find some eggs, but danged if I really want to pay a bunch of money for some shook up embryos that may not even hatch, especially when they have traveled half way across the country to get here. Until then, I'll raise up my hatchery birds, enjoy them and maybe sell some eating eggs once in a while.

Just going back through the thread to see if I have missed anyone. Most of the Old Lines of Poultry in the USA are owned by some of us Older poultry keepers and we mainly breed chickens for our own enjoyment. I have never sold eggs and the only chicks were some of the Marans locally when I decided to sell out entirely.

The best way to get some of these older breeds of Fowl is attend some shows in you area, talk to the people showing . I believe most of the large fowl on percentage are showed in the East or Midwest. I plan on being on the lookout for some SS at the shows I visit in the fall.

Somehow I missed this post and just want to comment now. I do not know if you answered this already but ths this male come from a breeder or a Hatchery ? Everyone please take a look at how wide he is in chest and even though the back is a little short, look at how wide it actuall is anyway.

If a person had a male like this and some decent SOP type SS female you set down a line of SS real quick. This male has the right amount of white to be a good breeding male.

Don,

How do you go about getting these folks to talk to at the shows without seeming pushy or deranged ??

You best bet is find one of the breeders when they are with the SS either in the show or in traders row. At the shows here in my area most of the larger shows have large trader row for selling fowl. Friday evening or saturday morning are the best time to check these out. Never saw an oldtime poultry person that didn't like to talk about their poultry.
