I lost my little guy, Lazer, yesterday.

I suspect it was the heat that caused the problem, it has been too darned hot and dry here for too long. He prolapsed. Was absolutely fine the night before, running around when the sun went down, the next morning this. Has anyone else ever had a cockerel or pullet prolapse? He was not even breeding age, only about 8.5 weeks. Everyone else in his pen is fine. My only SG, gone. It was so sad not seeing him out there this morning. I guess I will try again in the fall...

Aww im sooo sorry for your loss.. Hugs....:(

Oh Debbi! I'm so, so sorry! And I'm so sorry for your loss, Stoo, as well...Such a rotten part of raising these precious babies...

Oh no, Stoo! What happened to yours?? I had a Silkie in his pen that went wry necked on me. I believe that also was from the heat, as it is cooler and breezier today, and I had a hard time picking him out! Heat swells stuff, and this chick had a big vault, so I took it to be from the heat. But a prolapse? Are SGs that sensitive to the heat? An individual thing? I can't think of anything else to blame it on, this pen is very mellow and friendly towards each other. They have shade, and I have been changing water 4 times a day.

You would think with the naked neck that they would tolerate the heat better? At least I would. How do they tolerate the cold, if I was so wrong about the heat??

Thank you all for your sympathies, it does make me feel somewhat better; but I sure do miss the little guy...

I haven't told anyone, it happened a week ago.
NOT weather related.
After he was a few weeks old, he started having neurological symptoms.
Trouble balancing, couldn't walk. Well, he could, just wouldn't,
He turned into the greatest lap chicken of all my pets.
Every time I picked him up, he made the happiest noises.
He brought me such joy. I broke down and brought him to the vet.
She couldn't find anything that would help. Gave him a vitamin B shot.
All no charge, because she feels she didn't know what to do.
I've been having trouble sleeping lately, I was snuggling on the couch with him, and fell asleep.
One of the rare times I slept all night, and when I woke up, he was smashed in the corner between the cushions.
I killed him.
RIP, my little Dandelion.

So sorry Roberta! Sounds to me like he had a head trauma to beging with. While some come out of it, some don't. Try not to blame yourself, he probably thought it was a good place to curl up, and it just happened. Did he have a vaulted skull? Seems the ones that do are the ones that have these problems, not all, but quite a few. I am going to try again in the fall, you should too. These SGs are so special!

Yes, he had an OK vault. He has been up and down since he hatched.
I loved him so much that I ordered more eggs right after I got him.
Twice. The middle batch gave me 2 SGs, one black bow tie, and a partridge bearded bow tie.
The last batch were CJs eggs, post office destroyed them. None hatched.
Cj is having a bad time right now, I am afraid to post anything, for fear that BYC mods will spank me.
She lost her job on Friday, and is selling her parrot and her dog.
She barely has enough money to feed the chickens.
Her husband is late stage terminal cancer.
I just paypaled some money to her.
If anyone can help, PM me, I will give you her information.
Anything will be appreciated. She is a very proud woman, and won't ask for help.
But the Chicken Fairy Godmother will try to help.
To perpetuate those little fuzzies that stole our hearts

Bless your heart! Wish I was in a position to help, but it's not much better here. I will say prayers for her though.
