SICK CHICKENS!!!! antibiotics not helping PLEASE HELP no one around here knows anything!!!!!!!!

thank you so much for that post on how to box one up. i am in ga and i have talked to the bulldawgs so i am going to send them a blood sample. i will also send them the bird that will likely die in a few days with the swollen eyes. kinda wish i could kill it and freeze it so it doesnt infect any of my other birds. i have to get blood samples from the chickens.....what is the best way to do that?

not freeze i mean refrigerate...i just read that.....and i had them on duramycin

The University of Georgia is set up to do extensive poultry testing. I had my bird sent there and I am not even in GA.

It may well be worth your time to call and talk to someone there!

What part of GA are you in? I used to live there and there are a few vets I could recommend... I guess it depends on how far you are willing to drive.

Most any vet should be able to do a blood draw and send it off for you, if that is what you decide to do. Blood samples are taken under the wing and must be shipped in the appropriate vial with the same protection as other medical samples (usually cooled and overnight shipping). Even a general livestock vet should be able to do this simple procedure.

You have a few options here, I think it will be worth your peace of mind to figure out what is going on so that you can combat it with the most up to date info that we can get you. The first step is to figure out what ails your poor birds. All my best to you!

If they were mine i would dose with either LA-200 at 1ml per bird injected into the breast. 1st dose with follow up in 3 days or Tylan 50 .5ml per bird injected into the breast or orally 7 days.

Kathy may have more precision on dosages?
I can provide links for doses, but I can't really comment on dosing for drugs that I haven't used much (Tylan once, never used the other). Baytril I have used a bunch and the dose I was told to use is 15-20/kg (with 10% liquid that's .15-.2ml per 2.2 pounds) once a day for 5 days.

i dont want to put them on anymore antibiotics. i didnt know it messed up their eggs. like i said im new. i am trying to get a sample to UGA.

It only stays in the eggs for a number of days varied by the drug. But if you do not do something to solve the problem you will not have egg layers to lay.

There was a link to a withdrawal chart, but it no longer works.

Does anyone have it saved?

If you can, get a sample of blood from the sickest bird and send that with her, it will make testing easier and quicker for them.

so i just talked to someone at uga.....they say it sounds like infectious coricoriza....i know thats the wrong spelling....and even if they birds get over it, they will always be carriers and infect other birds. well THAT JUST SUCKS. i wanted to sell eggs, chicks, birds....they said to euthanize the whole flock including my 2 turkeys and four guineas and start over if i want to have birds to sell/trade. (which is what got me in trouble in the first place.) anyone have anything to add? i mean im not going to kill my whole flock without any testing being done...but i sure am discouraged here. poor birds are all sick because of my idiotic wrongdoing.....instead of just shooting them, can they atleast be sold off to be butchered after they are better? still trying to find a vet nearby that will do a blood sample for me

Have the sickest one tested. Then depending on what it is, you could have your special ones tested and keep the ones that test clean? I don't know much about respiratory diseases, and I don't know if that's a valid option since the whole flock has been exposed.
