Sick dying chicks. **UPDATE 8-7 PICS pg. 19**

Everyone seems to be doing better today here. I have to week old chicks that are still questionable and a few 5 week olds, but hopefully this will be done and gone in another week. Rhodey was crowing his heart out this morning when I went to let them out of the coop, so that was a good sign. I am working on ordering some vaccine so we don't have to go through this mess again. I would recommend that everyone vaccinate against the IB if you ever have any intention of having your chicks or chickens around anyone else's. You never know what you will bring back to your own flock. This has been one mistake that I don't intend to ever again repeat!

I have been reading up on as much as I can before I post my query on our girls as they have VERY similar problems. At first glance it seems like a little careless sneeze, but then you realize that it's a bit more chronic, and I have been spotting a little bit of diarrhea and/or runny droppings, along with lots of normal droppings also. We are still waiting to learn where the birds came from (ordered on-line) and what vaccines they have received...I will be posting a formal discussion in the Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures section

Stacey, sounds like you've got it well under control now; but, for what it's worth, I had a chick that was sneezing, lethargic...long story, but anyhow, I treated all that were together with Terramycin and they seemed fine within 48 hrs. About 2 weeks later, the one that was the worst to start with started sneezing again....a really wet sounding sneeze. I did a bunch of research and exchanged PMs with some very seasoned folks on BYC, and I ended up deciding to try Tylan. That was a month ago, and everyone (crossed fingers) has been healthy & in tip-top shape since then. I've heard great things about Oxine, but it's primarily a disinfectant. I'm planning on ordering some, and have decided that each 3rd cleaning, I'm going to spray down nest boxes and corners where stuff I can't see may be hiding; hopefully, I won't ever have to go through this again! My one that was so bad off to start with, I hand fed and spent hours and hours with, trying to get him through it. But, he's doing GREAT now!

That sounds a lot like what we've been dealing with hear. Sneeze, droppings, and all. Hopefully all will be well. Good luck with it. This has not been a fun trip and I can completely sympathize with you.

I have chose to keep administering the terramycin to help protect against a secondary infection as was recommended in my literature that I read. I also am getting the Oxine to disinfect before these new chicks hatch on the 21st. I am ordering vaccine to give to everyone to help protect against this again. I am glad to hear that you were able to get your chick straightened out! It really is a nightmare to have to go through when they all get sick like that. Thank you for recommending the Tylan. If it looks like we need it (hope we don't!) I will definitely be ordering some.
