Sick goose

Goose got another penicillin shot and a bit of fluids since goose is not walking yet. Only had to pay $20 this time. Needs another penicillin shot Wednesday and see the first vet again. Vet thinks she likely got a hold of a wire that cut her right lower jaw.

We first noticed two little bumps with an indent in between. Next day the indent appeared as a very narrow and shallow cut up to the tooth line. I first suspected a lodged wood splinter at that time, but was difficult to tell, this is not a tame goose. The bill slowly started to swell and is now about 1/4" wider on that side.

I had her on grass for a while this afternoon. She got to flap her wings and was getting upright many times only to flop over on her side, then she uses her bill and feet to right herself. Ouch!

She is spending another night in the house and inside her container. Weather allowing, she'll get to flap and bathe again tomorrow. Seems, I can encourage her to eat a few bites at a time and she also will swish her bill in the water bowl after each bite.

The cat was resting inside the litter box...with the cone firmly planted onto the side of the box...poor thing...
Was the vet able to look in her mouth? Hopefully the pen will knock out any infection. and dunking her face into ACV water will help too. Are you using niacin with her or brewers yeast? I know she got the one niacin shot but she probably needs to stay on niacin for a while, Poor baby well at least she hasn't given up. That's a good sign.

a kitty well hopefully it won't have to be humiliated many more days. LOL

Goose is making more attempts at getting up. Her bill did not swell up any more. Had her on grass again for an hour or so. She honked readily, but the others did not show any interest in her... poor girl. Might be a problem to reintroduce her as she gets stronger. Next outing I'll bring her closer to the others. I was able to reintroduce the ousted gander, so I sure hope the girl will be accepted again as well. Got bit by two ganders today! I entered their territory to empty and refill all their water buckets and pool. They showed no interest in me until I tipped over a bucket close to them. As I bent down to pick up the bucket, the two ganders were already on attack.

Yes, the vet was able to check out the inside of the goose's bill.

Drats, I bought that no flush niacin. I'll start mixing more brewer's yeast into her mush. The can I have is for human consumption and lists a host of vitamins.

The cat went back to the vet today. Turns out she had a slight fever and vet changed her antibiotic. My son also had a slightly transparent and a bit smaller cone for her. We had the vet put it on. The new cone can be removed easily to give the cat a chance to clean herself under close supervision of course.

Goose's appointment got changed to Thursday together with the cat. Oh great, I get to take both of em...

Don't think I mentioned - the goose was the star in the waiting room. A young couple joked about the "Golden Goose" of vet bills. Gee, compared to the fencing cost and feed, the vet bills seem minor... What did I get into?

Boy do I know what your saying I haven't had the vet bills but the fencing and feed is enough, good thing we love them huh? I'm glad to hear she is still making progress, hopefully as long as they can see her it won't be very hard to get her back with the group.

How do you take her to the vet and do you carry her inside in something? Seems like we need some visuals lol

glad to hear kitty got a new better fitting cone. Poor thing. lol

Hi clodhoppers, glad to hear the goose is making some progress. Funny about the golden goose. I doubt it´ll be too bad getting the goose back with the others, it´s nothing much that the others ignored her..they usually get excited if it´s a mate. When I had a goose sick and brought her up to the house, her two sisters weren´t terribly worried about it, and normally they´re inseperable. She got better, wne tback with the others and after the reunion party, all returned to normal....and generally geese don´t go down with so many ailments that others critters do, so they shouldn´t cost you a lot normally. I use Brewers Yeast with mine here, just once in a while...usually I use it with the tinies. I hope she´s soon better. It´s good news, though, that she´s still going. Good sign.
Cheeky ganders! Can´t take your eyes off them!!

Back from the vet again. Gooses bill is firm but still very swollen. She got more fluids and last penicillin shot. I have her out on grass she can hear the others very well but not see them. Goose could almost stand up all the way without flapping her wings and make a fairly easy landing. Sure looks like she is getting better.

Kitty scratched vet and me. Cone came off during transport so I had vet put it back on. That cone is driving my cat bonkers. Vet had planned to check stitches due to mild fever. Cat did not cooperate. I'll bring her back Tuesday for stitch removal and I will keep away from those claws. Looked like they had surgery day today and emergency surgery. Poor snow white fured puppy came in all bloodied.

I found an easy clean floor solution for the goose to be on. Waterproof indoor/outdoor shoe/door mats. If I was close to Costco I would get a large one. Can be pulled out easily and hosed off and drip dried. (I do have a brick floor)

I sure appreciate all the help and concern

What does the vet say about her bill still being so swollen? are you using ACV in her water still? when my gander put a hole in his bill I used the ACV 2Tab. to 1 gallon of water and I was amazed at how fast it healed, of course the injury wasn't as bad as your gooses but ACV can help with healing. Glad to hear she is feeling more stable on her feet too.
and poor kitty just isn't happy having to wear that collar. I hope you washed your scratches good they can get infected pretty easily, I can speak from experience.
Cool idea about those mats too, I have one at my back door so I'll know what to use if I have to have someone inside. I've been thinking about picking up another one too.

The goose bill is still a concern. I am sure it would heal faster, if it got a rest! Late afternoon I put her next to the fence with the others. They all checked her out for a while. Absolutely no threatening gestures. Looked promising.

Goose did not care for the apple cider vinegar in her water. Did one dip and shook her head a lot. So back to plain water with some lettuce floating.

Yeah, vet had a large bottle of antiseptic handy for the scratches. I definitely prefer the mats over towels.

The goose nest got even bigger. Ganders do not like for me to go in and check out the nest. No hen sitting yet...
