She may rank it out if it's in a super shallow pan. If you use the deeper window box style pans and let it get good growth she should be able to graze and not rip it out.

I just planted some wheat grass for my flock and it is a big hit. I place the seed right on top of the soil in a large grow box. put a piece of plastic hardware cloth [Lowes] cut to fit over the soil and then I put a piece of lattice over top to keep them from eating it too quickly. Since i have chickens eating this too it keeps them from being able to scratch out the soil and seed. Takes about a week for it to really get growing then about 2 more weeks till it's big enough to eat. I would be careful when buying seed that you don't get the kind thats treated. Thats why i went with Wheat grass so I could get organic. Maybe your talking about planting a large amount of grass seed over a large area.do they only eat the tops of the grass or will she pull it out by the roots? so i know how much I am going to have to buy?thanks

Cj, yes you can grow pans of grass in the winter. Set them up in your house under a grow light. Then when big enough take to the critters and let the, eat. I would run three sets, let them have set 1, set two is planted 1 week later. Take set 1 and give set 2, now you have set 3 planted 1 week after 2. When you take 2 away give them 3. This allows set 1 time to recover and grow high again. In the house under a grow light should keep you in greens. You could plant kale and other dark greens to,pick too.
Sure will in a few minutes..could you send me a pic so I can see what you did. I would greatly appreciate it.
