Sick hen (update: now dead) part of a 6 month death party PICS Page 2

wow chickengrl, I have to say you sure have learned alot and have given excellent advise. Taj I hope all the advise you have gotten will help you and your flock make a turn around real soon, don't give up. and please keep us updated on how everyone is doing..

For the garlic take and boil about 2 cups of water, mash up I would say 5 cloves b/c I know how big your waterer is and let it steep, then strain off the garlic and pour it into their waterer when it is cool.
Sorry that is all I can help you with.

Hope it Helps!

Any vet should be willing to do a fecal exam for maybe $20 for worms. Since they are in the soil and most chickens have at least a few worms, though, you might do best to just worm them. You need a pyrethrin product (poultry dust) for lice/mites. Or you could worm with ivermectin and kill both any lice/mites AND worms, except tapeworm. Actually, in your situation, I would no doubt do this.

You really need to check into the autopsy thing before you lose another, as the different labs want the bodies handled different ways before they do it. Your vet may know who to contact. You could call a local ag college if you have one. The state vet's office should know, probably will be the one to handle it. Your county extension agent may know.

Fowl pox is carried by mosquitoes and runs its course in 3 weeks, then the birds are immune. Although they can give it to each other, it seems odd to me that you would be seeing it at this time of year. Perhaps you are simply seeing peck marks. I had fowl pox run through my flock summer before last, and never saw it last summer, I presume because they were immune.

I personally don't feel this is the time to use things like garlic or cayenne in an attempt to control worms. It would seem that a quick sure kill would be the way to go, since there are so many things that could be going on here.

Yes, I would definitely think a dusting product would be good to use when you do your spring cleaning. Personally, I would not choose DE, I would find some "poultry dust" which is pyrethrins and permethrin, at least in my feed store.

Sorry you are going through this, and best of luck.

Thanks so much. I realize that I need to use the chemicals now for deworming and delousing. I didn't really look into that since I wanted to stay 'natural.' But now, as you said, I need to step it up. Where could I buy any of these things mentioned?

I was finally able to get the shavings out today now that the snow is gone. It was just impossible to do it during the winter when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground!! I am not going to do any hosing this time, since it is not warm enough to make the coop dry on time. I haven't put the new bedding in yet, however, so I could still do the pyrethrin spray/dust before I put the new bedding. Anything else I should do before I put the new bedding in? Should I do a spray of bleach even though I can't rinse it out?

Also, If I am going to use pyrethrin/permethrin or some other type of lice/mite killer, I would need to find some. I checked our local garden store as well as a dog/cat/horse/chicken feed store, and they didn't carry anything or have any idea where to find any chicken parasite killer. Any ideas where could I buy it online?????

I have had the fowl pox for a long time, probably since September. Maybe I am just seeing scabs, but I think I see way to may spots for it to be scabs. Here is a link with pics of some birds that had (what I think was) fowl pox . We live right next to a standing water swamp, so I am not surprised that I caught it. But can't birds spread it one to another without mosquitoes? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=430429
Thanks you SO MUCH for all of your help. I really appreciate all of your time.

I bought a pyrethrin/permethrin spray, generic, from TSC, at least a pint sized bottle. I had asked for Adams flea and tick spray. You can get Adams at most WalMarts and vets. Also, a garden center should have dust or spray. Since you're suing it in a coop you don't have to worry about overdose, any strength will do.

I'm not sure, at all, but am a little uncomfortable with the idea of bleach if you can't get it back out, as mixing bleach and ammonia produces toxic fumes, and chickens produce ammonia.

Yes, birds can spread fowl pox to one another. Maybe that is what you have; I don't really know. I live close to a swamp, too, and just don't see mosquitoes this time of year. And the time I had fowl pox, I didn't do anything about it except a one time application of Neosporin to try to prevent a bad skin infection. That's why I thought the scabs might be something else. No matter, really, that certainly isn't your major problem.

Again, good luck.

I looked at TSC's website and I found a poultry dust and an insecticide spray for poultry, but it was an "in store only" item, and we don't have any around here. I'll keep looking.
Wait, I just found some places online that sell this stuff. Actually I found a lot of places. So I found Adams spray and some powder insecticide; which should I use? It sounds like neither need to be rinsed out after, correct? So if it is going to be left in the coop with the bedding ontop, is one safer for the hens than another?

Ok, I won't use any spray on bleach. I'll wait until it is warmer.

Thanks

Remember the cuckoo maran that I had in the garage for a couple months? I put her back in the coop about a week ago. I found her dead in the coop this evening.

Calls will be flying out to the State Vet, Our county extension, and to the vet college nearby tomorrow. I am determined to get this one autopsied.

I am going to put her in a cardboard box on the garage floor. It is hovering around freezing right now, so I think that should be cold enough, right?

GOt to go do that, will right more later.

Ok, so I put her in the box in the garage.

Details about her death - last evening I noticed she was a little off, just an ounce of droopiness. So I thought that I would keep an eye on her. Today she was still just a tad off, and this evening when she didn't jump on the perch, I made up a quarantine cage away from the others outfitted with bedding, food, water, ect. I went to pick her up to put her in the cage about 2 hours later, and she was dead in the spot that she was sitting earlier.

I'll let you know if I get a hold of anyone who will do an autopsy.

About spraying for parasites: My plan is to spray the coop with :

Adams™ Flea & Tick Mist

For dogs, cats, puppies and kittens
Kills fleas, ticks and lice
Temporarily repels gnats, flies and mosquitoes
Available in 16 oz. and 32 oz.

(copied from website)

Then I would but the new bedding in after it dries. I thought I would use this instead of dusting powder since this would be easier to apply and I could spray the walls as well, since I would not be able to do that with powder. I thought that this should be fine for chickens since it is ok for puppies and kittens.

Is this a reasonable way to do it? Is it safe to use this product? Any thoughts? I don't want to do something wrong and make things worse!!

I plan to dust the birds with powder as well, but I am focusing on the coop right now because I need to do this in order to put the new bedding in. Right now they are on a scant layer of the old bedding, since I didn't want to clean everything out until I could put the new bedding in. I didn't want them walking directly on the vinyl floor; that cost enough!!

Thanks so much. Please let me know if my parasite plan is safe.

I haven't read through this whole thread, and I don't know where you are. Our state lab will do a complete necropsy for $30 if you bring them the chicken. It shouldn't be frozen, but keep it cool. Where are you?
